In PPt 2004 (Test Drive), I was able to drag and drop pictures directly from Safari (or any other onscreen source) into the Powerpoint workspace. In 2008, when I do the same thing, I just the URL.

I have an object with a black–transparent radial gradient layered over an image background on a slide.
