Pardon my amazing ignorance of Macs, but will *any* notebook HD work in a G3

I have a PowerBook G4 that can read/write DVDs.  I have a DVD I can play
on the recorder.  When I copy it on my Mac it copies with no problem,
but if I play it with DVD Player it freezes at the same spot every time.  
Even it I eject and reload it it does the same thing -- copies ...

I just recently picked up a PowerBook 180c real cheap, but it has a
problem. When it's running, the monitor has a white strip about one
inch high running across the bottom. Does anyone have any advice on how
to fix it? I know it's old, but I hate to give up on it so quickly.

So far I cannot print satellite images or hybrids, only maps. Any
suggestions?
