Word, Excel, Power Point all take about three  minutes to open a document, etc the first time for the day. Why is this and is there something I can do about it? Thanks

my mac was about to open my microsoft products when an error report popped up

I try to install office 2008 12.1.1 update and it tells me the software needed to install wasn't found.

called Silverlight.dmg.  I have no idea what it is or why I
may need it so I have held off on installing it.
