Can any kind soul cast light upon this puzzle?

I bought a second-hand imac G5 that wont boot past the Apple logo with the

I just bought a 17" iMac G5, and it emits a high-pitch buzzing sound that
fluctuates in frequency and volume.  It isn't very loud, but is quite
irritating.   Is this normal, or do I have a bad fan, power supply or ???

Many claim that HDs last longer when horizontal rather than vertical. Is
there any research to back that up? Also, would an odd angle, neither
vertical nor horizontal be worse than vertical?
