iMac OS 9 - Hard disk fails to spin up after spinning down.
This requires a reboot to fix ..potentially losing files and work
in progress
In addition there is an alarming rattle on spin down.

Twice over the last couple weeks I have had a seemingly unexplainable
problem that I was going nuts over, and almost made it out the door to

Someone gave me an older iMac which won't start up. Pressing the power
button, you hear the system wanting to start but after three or four
seconds, there is a slight crackling noise and everything goes dead.
If you press the button again, nothing happens. After a couple of minutes,
