MB hard drives11 Jun 2008 23:38 GMT22
Ok, so the HD is filling up a bit more than I expected (doesn't it
always?). I can manage for a while longer, but I reckon a bit of
breathing space would be handy.
What's the current favoured hard drive upgrade for a MacBook, I'd be
Setting time interval for disk sleep11 Jun 2008 21:19 GMT2
I was wondering whether I can adjust the time before hard disks are put
to sleep by the OS.
And also if it can be set differently for internal and external HDs.
Any pointers would be very much appreciated.
Quicktime 7.5 now on Software Update11 Jun 2008 18:57 GMT11
"QuickTime 7.5 improves application compatibility and addresses security
issues. "
So...it "does stuff" then.

Iphone upgrade11 Jun 2008 18:38 GMT-
Just got back from Fuerteventura about 2 hours ago, couldn't face
reading all 1800 odd posts so deleted them all, apologies if this has
already been brought up already.

Macbook pro back11 Jun 2008 18:31 GMT9
Yay! My macbook pro is back from the menders, and it is the same as
before, only working :-)
No memory missing or added, same processor board (spec, the board was
replaced), no new scratches.
mdworker mdworking overtime11 Jun 2008 17:31 GMT11
Yesterday mdworker suddenly decided it needed to do lots of mdwork, and
began consuming 100% of one CPU.
According to various bits of the interweb, mdworker is part of
Spotlight's indexing workerbees, and quite a few people have seen it go
Push notifications (somewhat technical)11 Jun 2008 17:00 GMT6
I'm pretty uncomfortable with this new "push notification" system.
To my mind, a good way of getting 'background' apps to respond to events
is to use some kind of registration system, similar (but more advanced)
than that used by Palm.
It's arrived.....11 Jun 2008 15:45 GMT6
The MB that is. Nice it is too. Being a refurb I was expecting there to
be a few odd marks, and there is on the casing, but not that you'd
notice. It does have a new battery though - only 2 cycles recorded.
Two negative comments - they could at least have put an updated version
DVD ripper alternatives11 Jun 2008 14:32 GMT11
the current version of MacTheRipper doesn't fare well with modern DVDs
with enhanced copy protection. It also appears that development has come
to a halt.
Are there any alternatives, free or commercial?
snipping mp3 files ?11 Jun 2008 13:01 GMT8
I have a gigantic mp3 file (a conversion of a cassete recording)
Is there a quick and easy freeware app for cutting it up into smaller
files without converting it to a flat file like a wav etc?
Thanks!
Codetek Virtual Desktops Back (Apparently)11 Jun 2008 06:34 GMT2
I see that what was once the best of the virtual desktop managers for
OS X - CodeTek Virtual Desktops - is now back with a beta version after
seeming to have been abandoned for quite a while now.

Booting up in OS9?10 Jun 2008 20:40 GMT5
Silly question - old G4, 2000 vintage, running, oh bugger, can't
remember if it's 10.3 or 10.2, and OS9.
How do you boot the thing up in OS9? Or isn't that an option?
Adding another network connection to an iMac10 Jun 2008 16:17 GMT2
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a network adapter with a USB
or Firewire connector. I want to plug it into my iMac to set up a
bridged connection between two networks. I have been using the wireless
connection up to now but the reception is patchy.
