Is there a VNC server that blanks out the local screen whenever the machine is being used remotely? There only seems to be three VNC servers; Vine Server, the Back to my Mac jobby built-in to OSX Leopard, and the abandoned CocoaVNC. Nne of

| Odd progressive crash | 15 May 2008 01:03 GMT | 23 |
I'm constantly getting this weird 'progressive crash'. It starts with the airport network dropping out (the other Mac doesn't even notice, so the network itself is fine). The airport icon greys out, but everything else seems normal. At least,

Rather good, actually - not a prank, just nicely done. A reminder of how much "fun" it was to work in the Mac OS, however much more useful its Finder folder-view windows were. http://www.macosxhints.com/images/OS9_full.png

| time machine - will it back up things like /usr/local ? | 14 May 2008 21:05 GMT | 20 |
Does TM back up places like /usr/local, /usr/bin, /etc, /var and so on? Or does it only back up folders that are readily visible in the Finder? The configuration screen is somewhat delphic in this respect. Ian.

I've been sent a Word document with an embedded file. The instructions from the sender are "Replace the file libjdic.jnilib (copy it out of the Word document) in the 'lib' directory with the file attached below." If I highlight the file icon in the Word document and copy it, I get ...

The £169 iPhone deal has worked in my office. Several people (all techies) have bought the 8GB models and unlocked them with ZiPhone. There were 3 on Monday :-) At least one of them is now talking about a MacBook Pro. The only problem is that everyone uses the Old Ring tone, which ...
