| iTunes search is text string | 19 Mar 2008 00:15 GMT | 4 |
Just found that iTunes searches for partial strings, so "illi" matches Chilli and Illionois and Killing. I'm sure it didn't do that in earlier incarnations.

| Backup solutions | 19 Mar 2008 00:01 GMT | 5 |
Now I have a shiny new Mac as my "main PC", I need to change the way backups are done on my home network. Previously, I did this: I had a Windows XP machine and a Mac mini. I used a program called SecondCopy

| Iphoto 6 | 18 Mar 2008 23:47 GMT | 3 |
Anyone know why when I send a photo via iPhoto 6 choosing Large which estimates it at 416 KB it actually sends it at 132 KB! If I choose Actually Size it sends it at the right size i.e. 2.9 MB. The mail client I use is Entourage if that makes any difference.

| Tiger for MacPro 2.66Ghz | 18 Mar 2008 23:22 GMT | 9 |
At work we've just bought one of the old model MacPro 2.66Ghz from Jigsaw. This model will run Tiger, but comes with Leopard. Because of the Quark Xpress version we have (6.5), we need to run Tiger. We have the retail version of Tiger family pack, but the disc we have

| MDD G4, Sound and OS9 Problems | 18 Mar 2008 22:24 GMT | 5 |
Not been around here for a while, as most of my belongings seem to have been giving me grief lately. Cheered up a bit on assembling various eBay buys into a reasonable G4 (MDD/ FW400/Cinema 20, with an M-Audio card to come) system for

| Disk space available - oddness | 18 Mar 2008 21:58 GMT | - |
I'm a little puzzled about this.... If I log in to my PowerBook (10.4.11) as Root, I have 180Gb available on disk - fine. If I log in as Thom, I still have 180Gb available on disk - but only

| Time Machine; how it works | 18 Mar 2008 18:38 GMT | - |
Some nitty gritty on how Time Machine works: http://earthlingsoft.net/ssp/blog/2008/03/x5_time_machine It's middlingly-technical, ie those of you happy diddling away in the terminal will already know it all, and those of you who have never

| Inspector? | 18 Mar 2008 18:15 GMT | 4 |
I just fired up Google Earth, and while it was launcing a dialog popped up saying "The application 'Inspector' has unexpectedly quit". What on earth is that likely to be?

| Thought apple had changed? | 18 Mar 2008 17:45 GMT | 6 |
After much consideration and the thought that my 2G4 1.25 is getting a bit long in the tooth, I thought it was time it got upgraded. The logical choice would be the macpro, as it was from a powermac, but really the desktop doesn't do as much as it used to do when we got it,

| Toast 9.0 | 18 Mar 2008 15:48 GMT | 4 |
I see that Toast Titanium is now available at version 9.0. I had a quick look at the release notes but nothing really leapt out and grabbed me. Worth the upgrade price? --

| Junk Mail | 18 Mar 2008 15:26 GMT | 7 |
Has anyone found a way to filter out the storm of junk advertisments we seem to be getting recently? My trick of filtering out cross-posted items doesn't work, as these are not.

| 1 Jan 1970 | 18 Mar 2008 12:32 GMT | 9 |
My daughter has my old 15" G4 Powerbook in Dubai. She says it reverts to this date every time she boots it. She corrects the date in sys prefs but it reverts to 1970 on the next boot. Obviously this is a PRAM issue, she's not technical. I can point her to

| Vodafone 'Mobile Broadband' usage | 18 Mar 2008 12:11 GMT | 5 |
I've just gone for a £15/3Gb pm contract with Vodafone for their mobile broadband. I considered the 3 pay-as-you-go deal, but their coverage maps looked pretty thin - and I don't know anyone with a 3 phone locally who I could check with.
