Is there any way of changing the boring orange logo that pops up when
you plug in your average external FW / USB drive to something else (a
photo, for instance) that will pop up when you plug that same drive into

A file with an AI8 icon won't import into Illustrator CS2. It appears
as text, the text being presumably the page-description which comprises
the file.
So, my question: what contemporary software will open it?

Somehow I've managed to duplicate a few hundred of the entries in my
