Toshiba throwing in the HD-DVD towel18 Feb 2008 10:28 GMT34
Reuters, and others, are reporting that Toshiba are giving up on HD-DVD. See:

Next battle: Blu-ray discs vs. HD downloads.
I'll support both I think.

A bit like looking at other peoples' Docks and menu bars.
Given a new mac with the appropriate build of OS X what would be the
first five apps you would install. Mine would be:

Using Air accessories on other Macs17 Feb 2008 22:00 GMT16
Things I have discovered today.
Air 45W power supply: The teeny Air PSU will happily fit and feed a
MacBook for a while (long enough to install Leopard), and then cuts
out (during Spotlight database creation, when the fans ramp up for a
D'oh... Filled my HDD17 Feb 2008 21:27 GMT17
Due to a <cough> user error, I have managed to *completely* fill my hard
disk.
I've deleted the offending data and now have a clear 20GB.   Having run the
machine with a full HDD, is there anything I ought to do to tidy it up?

Software update17 Feb 2008 15:52 GMT10
I just did one, on OS 10.4.11. There was a security update, plus a Java
update to Java issue 5 (I think it was). Applied those, and on
restarting it told me there was an extra update... to Java issue 6. So I
did that one too. No big deal. But how usual is that? To do an update to
Third party apps; what the iPhone needs17 Feb 2008 14:41 GMT17
Here's a handful of things that I think the iPhone is sorely lacking,
that hopefully the any-day-now iPhone SDK will allow third parties to
address. Some of these may have been addressed by the unofficial apps
out there, but - for the sake of argument - I don't think that they are
Intel iMac experience17 Feb 2008 13:16 GMT19
I have had to buy a Dual-core Intel iMac to produce 24-bit 96k Broadcast
WAV files for a customer (the customer offered to pay for it).  So far,
the experience has not been a good one.
I really loathe OSX after the ease of use of OS 8.6  It isn't just the

I'm after a TARDIS icon. Yes, it's for a Time Machine drive. Yes, I'm
aware it's sad. No, I don't care.
Anyone know of one? XIcons has failed me.

Spotlight - is not?17 Feb 2008 09:25 GMT7
Is there any way to search for something in content, and *exclude*
Safari history items? It's bloody annoying that almost everything I
search for I've looked at on t'interwebs at some point, so my Safari
history is full of search results.
New Mac Mini Fan is noisy, how do I quiet it down?17 Feb 2008 07:20 GMT11
I just purchased a new Mac Mini Intel 2.0GHz Duo Core with 2GB & 160GB
drive, and it likes to run the cooling fan at 5400 RPM to keep the
processor at 95F to 105F. When I stop using it, the processor temp
will increase to 120F, and the fan drops down to a quiet under 2000
Using IE6 or 717 Feb 2008 00:11 GMT5
We need to give a few users access a site that requires IE6 or higher
[1]. Trying to pick the most transparent way to intergrate this to the
few users that need it.
ie4osx doesn't work, so that leaves Crossover, Parallels, and VMWare. My
