Having bought a copy of both now, I'm experimenting. They seem pretty comparable for XP vms except for a few things. VMware is lower CPU usage. VMware is better at single window mode.

I start my systam and all is fine until it is time for the earth to show up then all I see is a blue rim around the planet and I can see right through the earth and see stars...it is like there is nothing there.
