Changing short user name11 Mar 2007 22:59 GMT4
Okay, we're slowly nailing this problem of accessing a hard drive over the
LAN. The trouble seems to be that on one machine Valentina's account has the
short name valentina, and on the other she's vt.
I know it's a real pain to change the short name, but it looks like it has to
Cheap-but-good speakers?11 Mar 2007 21:52 GMT16
I'm looking for a set up of cheap-but-good computer speakers. 'Good'
here is defined as: able to play driving and probably bassy tracks, not
as in clarity for classical purposes.
The reason is that although they -are- getting hooked up to a computer,
bootcamp drivers for xp, anyone?11 Mar 2007 19:51 GMT2
Has anyone got access to the XP bootcamp drivers that they could put
up somewhere temporarily for me?  I've downloaded the bootcamp app
from Apple but don't currently have 10GB free, so it won't generate
them for me.  I'm not trying to dual boot - I just want them for
Double icons in Finder Sidebar?11 Mar 2007 18:45 GMT1
For some reason my icons in the Finder Sidebar are repeated?
They just appeared today sometime.  If I try delete one of the
duplicates it deletes both of them?
Can anyone advise why this might have happened & how to rectify it?
Acer N50 expansion cards11 Mar 2007 18:39 GMT-
Anyone with one of these devices know what the maximum capacity card it
can take (SD and Compact Flash II)?
The manual doesn't say which is less than helpful.

Command-line VPN11 Mar 2007 18:15 GMT-
I'd like to write a shell script to initiate a VPN connection and switch
some settings in my mail client (because I keep logging into the VPN and
forgetting to change mail settings).
Does anyone know what, if any, are the command-line equivalents to
Access privileges on external HD across LAN11 Mar 2007 16:24 GMT10
Valentina wants to back up some files to one of my external hard drives, over
the LAN. She logs on to my computer (using her account) and mounts the drive
without a problem. But she can't write to it - access privileges are wrong.
I've tried to change the access privileges, but I ...

Deleting dot underscore files using rm11 Mar 2007 13:52 GMT10
Can any clever person tell me how to recursively delete files beginning
._ from a directory system, using the command line?
I've tried rm -r .-* but it doesn't seem to work.

Yikes! How to get rid of duplicate emails..?11 Mar 2007 08:34 GMT6
Just setup mail.app to d/l mail from a Gmail address. Previously had all
Gmail forwarded to my mail.app address. Now I have 697 new emails (in my
Gmail folder) that were previously forwarded. How do I get rid of *just*
these 697 (new) duplicates?
Happy Birthday for a week on Saturday!11 Mar 2007 08:22 GMT14
I'm off on holiday this evening and the Birthday-o-Matic's refusing to
run in automated mode, so I'm posting a couple of birthdays in advance.
The second birthday boy is James Dore, who is 33 on Saturday the 10th of
March. Have you worked out what date and time you are 33.3333333 ...
PDFPen10 Mar 2007 23:39 GMT6
Is PDFPen the way to go for a utility to allow you to fill in text PDF
forms and such like? It's quite expensive, in both the standard and pro
versions.
Any alternatives? What about the full version of Acrobat itself?
Happy Birthday for Saturday!10 Mar 2007 23:29 GMT14
I'm off on holiday this evening and the Birthday-o-Matic's refusing to
run in automated mode, so I'm posting a couple of birthdays in advance.
First off, we have Colin Robinson - a somewhat infrequent poster who last
posted end of December, but we make no judgements here; he still ...
Nostalgia fest10 Mar 2007 23:29 GMT23
Earlier on today, whilst clearing out my attic preparatory to moving house
next week, I came across a dusty old Banker's Box.  On opening it, I found
all the original documentation relating to both my 128k Mac and Mac Plus.
Everything is in there - the original marketing brochures, ...
