SETI style cancer research?26 Nov 2006 19:15 GMT5
Back when I ran a number of PCs I used the grid.org cancer research
screensaver (a SETI style project run by United Devices/Oxford Uni).
Unfortunately they don't have a Mac or Linux client and I'm not running
it through VirtualPC (which is bad enough as it is).
Burning through an external enclosure26 Nov 2006 19:07 GMT7
As I posted previously the superdrive on my 15" PB died a while ago so
I've just gotten myself a Safecom 5.25" external enclosure and plumbed
an NEC 1300± DVD±RW into it.
The drive doesn't get picked up under Firewire but does under USB and I
Pithhelmet and 'block all plugins'26 Nov 2006 17:34 GMT-
Does anyone have a problem with Pithhelmet keeping turning on 'block
all plugins', even though it's not set in the preferences? I rarely
quit Safari, but when I do I always find that Pithhelmet has turned on
its blocking preference on the restart.
Supplies of Mac graphics card gone AWOL.26 Nov 2006 13:31 GMT-
I've been trying to get an AGP card for my Dual G5, but there seems to
be problems getting the darned things now. Anybody else having trouble?
I'm currently waiting for an ATI 9600 AGP (ADC and DVI) card, it's in
its 5th week now, and on the third new delivery date, currently the ...
SATA II vs SATA26 Nov 2006 12:26 GMT3
Are they compatible? More to the point, can I put a SATA II drive* into
a Mac with a SATA (1?) controller? I read through the techno-babble on
wikipedia, but am none the wiser.
* specifically the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400 GB
X11 for MacBook Pro26 Nov 2006 11:23 GMT4
Does anybody know if X11 comes with OS X for Intel ? I just got a new
MacBook Pro and I can't find any trace of the X11 on the machine. I
looked through the OS X DVD  but I can't find it there either. I
donwloaded the latest update for X11 from Apple website and at the end
license keys26 Nov 2006 11:04 GMT18
I had a weird situation today watching someone screen shoting the
loading the screen on one of the apps we use. When asked they said they
wanted to use the application logo. On closure inspection I have
discovered it looks as if the license key for an install comes up when

Chords and keys25 Nov 2006 23:29 GMT22
Can any of you music mavens recommend a program that will help with
chords and keys? I believe that there are some good guitar-based
programs out there - the kind of thing where you can for example tell it
that you're using A, C#m, F#m and B and it will say, dude, that's in C

VirtueDesktops25 Nov 2006 19:05 GMT8
Is anyone using recent versions of this? I see it's now up to 0.53r241.
VT seems to be full of reports of bugginess in recent updates. I've
stuck with 0.52(175), which is fine here. Any compelling reasons to risk
an update?
Fonts ? Interstate and Frutiger25 Nov 2006 19:03 GMT14

God I hate Spotlight25 Nov 2006 17:37 GMT34
I'm going to set up a cronjob to make this a monthly moan - I just can't
believe how utterly shite Spotlight is. I know my PB G4 400Mhz isn't
state of the art, but the old Finder find was fine.
My heart just sinks every time I want to find anything, because
Was: Mac-on-a-stick now DTV-on-a-stick.25 Nov 2006 16:49 GMT2
Mainly in response to Peter Lee's thoughts / prompt I downloaded last
night and tried just now equinux's MediaCentral on the Freecom DVB-T
(XP only Stimpy!) USB stick on the Mini.
I am pleased (and impressed) to say it worked first time, finding and
