"Show Item Info" on desktop07 Oct 2006 22:03 GMT3
There's an option to "Show Item Info" in "Show View Items"; it gives a
one-line bit of information under the item's title on the desktop.
If the item is a hard drive, it shows how much space is free. Well, actually
it shows how much space was free when you first turned on the ...

I can't recall where I saw this link this morning and I disagree with
some of it. It may be of interest though and is slightly amusing.

What's the best (free) way to have remote GUI access to home Macs? VNC

What do I need to bear in mind? I think I have a dynamic IP address, and
it's going through a NAT router. Will these cause problems and how do I
USB 2 card driver07 Oct 2006 17:55 GMT3
Technical questions. I bought a PowerMac a while back, and it had a
USB2 card fitted (Belkin, 5-way). Now, I reinstalled the OS and did not
appreciate that this card needed a "3rd party driver" (Belkin's way of
saying that they don't support Mac OS X). I did some googling and found

What's in this .avi file?07 Oct 2006 16:12 GMT6
I have a .avi file, which should be a 174MB video (a few of them in
fact).
Nothing seems to want to play it. QuickTime player says "The movie could
not be opened." VLC opens it but plays nothing. WMP says the file format
zune hands-on07 Oct 2006 13:53 GMT12
Streaming video of MS bolkey showing off zune:
http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=2009395n
Warning - there's an ad before the actual video.
It certainly doesn't *feel* like it will be a competitor to the iPod
Where can I get a battery refurbished?07 Oct 2006 12:16 GMT4
I have a dead Lithium-Ion battery from a G3 PowerBook that I would like
to get refurbished. Does anyone know of a firm in the UK that will
recell the batteries? A Google search produced results for firms who
will recell non-Lithium Ion batteries.
Is $49 a good price for Adobe Premiere?07 Oct 2006 11:35 GMT-
I ran across this link on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=019&item=290036024876&rd=1&sspa
gename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

for Adobe Premiere where it is currently selling for under $25. I was
hoping to put in a max bid of $49. Is this high enough?

I'd imagine this could be knocked up in applescript or automator if I
wasn't clueless with both.
I want to automatically do incremental backups of particular folders
A type 2 error has occurred .. +bbq07 Oct 2006 09:42 GMT11

Apple refurb store just emailed to say my refurb'd MBP has been shipped

newbie who likes audio and video editing, loads of photos to store and
System alert sounds have stopped playing06 Oct 2006 21:37 GMT1
On the MacBook, I've just discovered that my account has stopped
playing system sounds. That is to say that iTunes will play music, the
volume control keys will make their normal sound, video will play with
sound etc. but something such as text messages in iChat will no longer
BBColors06 Oct 2006 20:22 GMT-
Just spotted (courtesy of del.icio.us) that John Gruber has created a
command-line tool for saving and loading text color preference schemes
for BBEdit and TextWrangler. I  gave this a try and t seems like it
will make it easy to define and apply schemes.
