| Xserve: fans speeds? | 07 Sep 2006 08:09 GMT | 12 |
Anyone got an Xserve they can login to? What fan speeds have you got? I've got an incredibly noisy one, all fans bar PCI are on 12,000rpm. I can't get the bloody thing to shut up. Nothing showing up in top that's eating cycles...

| What to do about application icons messing up? | 06 Sep 2006 23:56 GMT | 6 |
MacOS 10.3.9, and I sometimes find that an application's icon will be replaced with some random icon. Rebooting clears the problem - but is there a more elegant fix? Cheers,

| Imacs = Value | 06 Sep 2006 23:20 GMT | 1 |
I don't get why Imacs are so good value compared to the rest of Apples Line. For the price of the standard config Mac Pro + 23" ACD you are £200 short of being able to buy 2 x brand new 24" Imacs, or 2 x 20" Imacs and 1x 1.8Ghz Mac Mini.

| What to do with not-that-old Macs ? | 06 Sep 2006 21:51 GMT | 18 |
My job requires that I relocate every 3 years or so. That is of the same order of magnitude of the lifespan of a computer, so every few moves, it means I have a computer that is past its prime to decide what to do with.

| GHz confusion! | 06 Sep 2006 21:51 GMT | 8 |
So, I'm severly attracted to the new 24 inch iMacs - screen size and small footprint do it for me. Trouble is I have a fairly high spec Quicksilver and don't like the idea of getting something that might be less powerful. How can I compare these Apples and Oranges?

| Backing up DVDs | 06 Sep 2006 21:39 GMT | 8 |
The children's favourite DVDs are starting to skip and stutter a bit, purely due to sticky fingers etc. I can copy them across to blank media via MacTheRipper and something like DVD2OneX (or Popcorn, I suppose), but that's just postponing the

| Intel help needed | 06 Sep 2006 15:36 GMT | 14 |
I'd like some ideas of how I can transfer settings and content (safari, mail, address book, iTunes, appleworks,), and software, from a Mac mini to an Intel Mac mini. From anyone who has done this your general or specific approach would

| Automatic anchors | 06 Sep 2006 15:29 GMT | 6 |
Is there a simple way (this side of Perl?) to add an anchor for the first instance of each letter on a web page? The items are in the form:
Apple

| Updating iPhoto thumbnail | 06 Sep 2006 15:26 GMT | 6 |
iPhoto 6 imported all the little movie snippets we took on holiday from our camera (Fuji F30) and lets me play them (via Quicktime Player). All fine and dandy. It Just Works. However, I shot one clip in portrait mode so it appears rotated. If I

| Mount only on reboot? | 06 Sep 2006 12:02 GMT | - |
The Samsung mp3 player that I had (and rather liked as it was of the same form factor as a memory stick thing) would get recognised in system profiler, but not mount if plugged in 'live'. If you rebooted, it would show up, but after ejecting the drive it wouldn't see it if you ...

| Need help with iPod HD problem | 06 Sep 2006 11:07 GMT | 10 |
My 20GB iPod started playing up recently. After syncing with iTunes it appeared to have no music on it at all, even though I'd had around 11GB on it prior to the sync. Resetting didn't help, nor did the software updater which I had to apply
