Intel Macs have sockets like any sensible computer?31 Jan 2006 23:27 GMT2
Reading an article on xlr8 suggests that the Intel Macs have a bog standard
processor socket. Are the days of sensible processor upgrades returning?
When is PCI not PCI?31 Jan 2006 22:37 GMT12
I recently acquired a PCI 3 port Firewire card and I thought I'd put it in
my PCI Dual 1.8 G5. I already have a PCI  card in there. The card says 'Mac
and PC' on the box and it definitely fits a PC PCI slot. However, on my Mac,
there's an extra slot needed in the toward the front ...
PC & Mac compatible wireless to 56K modem31 Jan 2006 21:30 GMT1
I use an Airport Extreme with ethernet to a cable modem and built in
modem for backup, my other half can use an XP windows laptop with a
Belkin USB wireless to talk to it. Because we live in 2 homes I need a
wireless + modem equivalent to Airport for her flat as she's not got
Address Book is a bit stoopid...31 Jan 2006 19:18 GMT36
Address Book a very nice program on the whole. It has excellent vcard
exporting options, including saving as individual vcards, encoding types and
version. However in one respect its pretty dim.
Drag vcards from it to the desktop. This universal file interchange format

5th Gen iPod 'Hmmm'ness31 Jan 2006 18:37 GMT5
Ok, so I now have a 30GB white 5th gen iPod. As I have a G4 tower I've
also bought a 4 port USB2 PCI card (Belkin).
The G4 is seeing the card fine. The iPod mounts fine, charges fine etc.
However...and you knew there'd be a 'however'...there's two small flies

A friend of mine is having some grief with an old iMac.
Here's the conversation so far:

Pages 1 - export to Word31 Jan 2006 15:55 GMT3
Exported my all-new Pages-based CV to Word. Opened the resulting .doc
up in Word 2002 on a PC and...
Hmm. Line spacing everywhere, graphic objects everywhere and just to
finish things off a nice crash from Word the first time it opened the
Darwin source releases31 Jan 2006 14:57 GMT14
I recently asked this question on darwin-x86, but as it's been silent
for ages I wondered whether anyone in this fine froup had any input ;-)
The most recent release of Darwin is 8.4, corresponding to Mac OS X
10.4.4 *for PowerPC Macintoshes*.  I wonder why the change in

home folder - Applescript dosn't seem to understand "~"?

Weird problem with Postfix setup on port 26?31 Jan 2006 10:38 GMT4
This seems a little strange to me. I'm setting up Postfix at present.
DNS and resolution is all fine.
SMTP service seems to be working fine for receiving email to the server from
external hosts.

iPhoto 06 idiocy31 Jan 2006 09:20 GMT41
Dearohdear. The idiocy may well be mine, however. I am a bit baffled
though, but I think it's to do with the new library structure in 06.
I got iPhoto Buddy and decided to make a new library, leaving the old
one for my ixus ii pics, and make a new one for the EOS350 pics. I
Brighten up a video file?31 Jan 2006 02:24 GMT1
Is there anything similar to iPhoto's 'enhance' option available for DV
video? I don't much care if the processing takes place in or outside of
iMovie, but I have some unavoidably dark footage that I'd like to
brighten up an awful lot.
