Advantage of knowing a tiny bit about Vista and unix01 Oct 2008 00:03 GMT55
Reasons for learning a bit about unix and Vista.
Notice I lumped them together, that is because they
are both difficult, when with a little design effort,
they could have been made  _easy_ , like good old

Question about ethernet addresses30 Sep 2008 09:16 GMT7
Hoping one of you sharp IT guys can answer a question about ethernet
addresses on my Mac. So far, I seem to be coming up with two different
addresses for a single machine, and I wonder which one is lying to me.
Running System Profiler yields the following for my G5's MAC address
Ping Mark Conrad--Hex zero revisited30 Sep 2008 01:49 GMT22
Hi Mark, I hope this gets through. I've started a new thread because I
have _twice_ tried to respond to the thread you started; and, while what
I quoted of your post got through, what _I_ wrote did not in both cases.
(Maybe it's the NSA!)
"Techno-Geekism" [Quite Off Topic]30 Sep 2008 00:57 GMT8
It seems that increasingly electronic appliances, computers, microwaves, and
on-and-on, are becoming increasingly, and to me, unnecessarily, complex, and
I get the feeling that the reason is often "just because it is easy to do".
This really has come to my attention with a problem ...
This f.cking blows...29 Sep 2008 23:59 GMT15
...big time.  It's not a hardware issue because the drivers with 10.5.2
work fine.
I've been too busy to post to c.s.m.s. for months so I'm too f.cking
busy to deal with a computer that doesn't work.
I Miss My Backspace Key:  Is there software that would allow me to     plug in a standard keyboard?29 Sep 2008 20:34 GMT32
I switched to Mac.  I'm finally used to it now and like it a lot.  It
has a lot of nice features, but I miss my "Backspace" key.
Is there software that would allow me to plug in a standard keyboard?
Thanks in advance for any help.
html - what app to use?29 Sep 2008 14:17 GMT4
textedit won't save html files.
Bit of a newbie on html and I no longer have quarkxpress.
Advice?
max size for single-layer DVD?29 Sep 2008 07:48 GMT4
When backing up to DVD, I seem to spend a lot of time trying to figure
out what the max size is for a single-layer DVD+R or DVD-R.  I just
tried 4.23 GB and that didn't fit.  If they know the folders I'm
trying to burn are too big, why can't Apple just tell us how much we
Proxy nightmare29 Sep 2008 01:14 GMT2
Well I don't find a way to get rid of a universitary proxy, it would
be great if someone could help me (at least with an explication of
some sort).
I have this proxy that has only open the ports 22 and 80 (apparently),
Burning .avi movie files to DVD format28 Sep 2008 21:11 GMT1
What program would you recommend so I can take .avi movie files and
convert them into DVD format, so they work on regular DVD players.
Something that would let me create a menu, etc. I'm not looking for
anything fancy and expensive, just something cheap that does the

Does G5 use high or low density RAM?28 Sep 2008 16:11 GMT3
I'm looking to add a couple of 1GB RAM DIMMs to my dual 2GHz G5, but
notice many advertisers distinguish between high density and low
density memory. Is this an issue for G5s? Which should I buy and if
either will work, is there any advantage to using high density?
Time Machine won't work28 Sep 2008 15:30 GMT19
With my PowerMac DP 1.8 GHz G5 (March 2004 version with 8 memory slots)
running Mac OS 10.5.5, Time Machine will no longer back up to my Maxtor
Firewire 500 GB (123 GB available out of 465 GB) external drive. The
last backup was on Sept 16.  Executing "Back Up Now) from the Time ...
can't verify disk28 Sep 2008 14:36 GMT25
My aunt has a G5 iMac with Tiger.  My cousin used it extensively during
a visit of several days.  During the visit, my aunt phoned to say she
was no longer able to contact her SMTP server using mail.app.  It worked
after she restarted her computer.
