I have a MacBook Pro with a built-in CD/DVD burner. I am trying to find out, if I transfer a CD to my hard disk, does it go straight out as a bit stream or does it go through an D/A->A/D conversion? Ditto when I burn a CD from HD.

I have a Plextor external FW/USB dual layer DVD tray type burner. It exists in a fairly dusty place and it used to work perfectly. I didn't use it for about four months and now it will only play commercial audio CD's and won't write anything. It will not read commercial DVD's. ...
