Parallels - requires admin password - why? can I change that?27 Dec 2007 23:46 GMT5
I am using Parallels to run Windows XP for software not available for
Mac OS X (eg TomTom HOME/GPS, learning CD's etc).
I have set it up to use the BootCamp partition's data.
This is on Mac OS X 10.5.1 on a MBP, using Windows XP SP2 with all
Puzzling permissions problem27 Dec 2007 23:29 GMT5
I have a PPC Mini running Leopard 10.5.1. The update from 10.5 was a bit
problematic. I thought I'd solved my problems but decided to take Mr.
Oates advice and update to the latest today. I was in a standard user
account and clicked on download update. My admin user password ...
External HD going from MacOS 9 to MacOS-X?27 Dec 2007 21:18 GMT2
Hello!  I have an external Firewire hard drive formatted by a MacOS 9.2
computer I need to read on a MacOS-X 10.3.9 computer.  Can I do this
safely, with no risk of data loss or corruption of the format?  Will the
drive be 100% recongnizable by the MacOS-9 machine afterward?

There's yet another security update available -- I've intalled it, and

Dashboard Questions27 Dec 2007 17:00 GMT4
I skipped Tiger so I'm kind of behind on Dashboard and related security.
I've done some reading but I seem to keep running across the same
references from when Dashboard was first introduced.  It seems that many
times when I access the Dashboard, Little Snitch reports a whole ...

I wonder if this group has gone dead. Nothing new for a long time. Well
maybe today after new owners get their Mac gifts!
Merry Christmas to all.

SATA/USB combo PCI card that is Mac compatible.27 Dec 2007 13:20 GMT1
I've seen these cards around for PC, wondering if anyone has come
across a Mac compatible usb 2.0/sata combo card. This seems like it
would be a good solution for G4/ppc folks.
Thanks for looking
[mac.system] Two Leopard Issues27 Dec 2007 07:36 GMT3
First off, in another thread someone suggested that prefixing the subject
lines in this group might help to distinguish real posts from the
ever-increasing background noise. Someone else suggested [mac.system] as
an easy to recognize prefix. I'm all for it. I've seen this tactic ...
Show Desktop with 2-finger Click27 Dec 2007 07:01 GMT4
I was always able to invoke Expose's F11 command to show the desktop by
simply clicking with 2 fingers on the trackpad of my MacBook.
I still can do it. Problem is I can't get another computer to do it, and
I cannot remember what I did to set it up so a 2-finger click = F11.

iPhone vs iBook receptivity27 Dec 2007 00:46 GMT2
This is just an interesting observation.
I manage two houses in the U.S. Virgin Islands which are separated by
about 70 feet, and I live on the lowest level of one.  The other house
varies between the owner and short term rentals.  The owner has a 3 year

When windows folks in my group send me Word files for publication on
my site Appleworks usually will open them.   When that fails
TextEdit.app usually gets the job done.   In Word 2007 Microsoft has
introduced a new format called .docx which cannot be opened with
Wobbly screen26 Dec 2007 16:31 GMT5
A friend asked for help that I couldn't provide.  He has a older G4
tower that has an "unstable" image on his LCD monitor.
If the mouse is moved to the right the screen shifts to the left.
Similar shift occur in all directions.  Makes game playing for this
