Hard drive error?  Help!03 Dec 2007 23:00 GMT6
When I restart my computer, the desktop that I see appears to be a
factory install of OSX.  I don't know what happened!  The icon bar was
reverted to typical icons (garageband, itunes, iweb etc)  as well as
the desktop being switched to the traditional apple blue screen.
Hard drive format question: Mac vs PC03 Dec 2007 22:58 GMT2
I have a question concerning hard drive formats.  I have a 250 Gb
Western Digital usb external hard drive I am using for backup.  When I
purchased the drive, my Macbook Pro and windows desktop both
recognized the drive.  I recently reformatted the drive into 2

Where in the name of any god you care to believe in, is all this crap
coming from, and why?  Have we upset someone?
Formatting Video Made from Quicktime Video Screen Captures, for YouTube?03 Dec 2007 21:18 GMT1
I have not yet found a way to upload video made from Quicktime video
screen captures (e.g. to demonstrate software) to YouTube, without
unacceptable smearing and blurriness resulting from the YouTube
resampling that is done when they convert the video to Flash.

Will it come out?
Erasing a Hard Drive03 Dec 2007 18:56 GMT5
I've replaced a pair of external FW drives with a terabyte mirrored
RAID. Now I'm going to erase those drives for use elsewhere.
Does it matter -- reliability wise -- how I erase, i.e., does it matter
whether I zero-out the drives. Security is not a consideration here.
Leopard Gripe: Aliases03 Dec 2007 18:53 GMT91
I use aliases. A lot.
When I was running Tiger, an alias took up 4kb of space. On Leopard,
when I create a new alias, they take up 508kb of space, though old
aliases continue to work and remain 4kb.
Favorite unballyhooed Leopard features03 Dec 2007 18:51 GMT2
Okay, by now we've all been through the PR stuff that drones on about
Time Machine, Spaces, Stacks, and the like -- the highly visible new
Leopard features. But Apple talks about "300 new features" without
enumerating them.
Need Help with Sonnet Fusion D500P and X4P SATA card install on OS X03 Dec 2007 17:17 GMT3
I am struggling with the installation of a 5 bay Serial ATA
enclosure, the Fusion D500P, from Sonnet. I am running OS X, 10.4.11
on my PowerMac G5. I installed the SATA card, the X4P, it appears
under PCI Cards as so:

Redhat Linux Network Security
Covering everything about security would take several volumes of
books, so we can only look
at the basics. We can take a quick look at the primary defenses you
Name of a time-saving application required03 Dec 2007 11:58 GMT3
I previously had installed an application on my Mac that when you
typed a certain character sequence replaced it with difference
characters (worked anywhere where this was typed).
I have had to erase my hard drive and reinstall everything, but I
Another problem with iMac G303 Dec 2007 05:18 GMT4
My iMac G3 Blondi Blue (currently running Mac Os 8.6) no not respond
to my USB keyboard and mouse. I tried to plug the keyboard to another
USB port, still it won't respond.
LaunchOnce03 Dec 2007 04:38 GMT4
I have a file named "LaunchOnce" in my startup items, but I have no
recollection of what it is supposed to do or when I put it there.  I
can't find it on my disk, and ~/library/startupitems folder is empty
(which makes me wonder where all the startup items live).
