Is it possible to install open-source software on the Mac by downloading the source code and building it (the way it's done on other UNIX flavours, like Linux and Solaris)? Or do applications somehow have to register with the OS?

I somehow managed to lock myself in a corner. When I start Terminal, the defaul window is really tiny (just slightly larger than the red close button). I cannot resize it by dragging its lower left corner.
