I am trying to install Tiger on a Powerbook G4 that runs the latest
version of Panther at the moment (it was the last one that shipped with

Trouble with word used by operating system X08 Aug 2007 04:09 GMT32
Definition of word used by OS X  (Operating "System" X)
The word in this case is "service".
What is a service in OSX talk?
Well the snotty and unfriendly people in this NG would likely tell me to
New Ad08 Aug 2007 01:50 GMT19
Apparently Apple is advertising that Windows comes with a bunch of
stuff we don't want, while Macs come with just what we want.
Let me see, Macs come with iHome, while Windows has its media player.
I don't want half of iHome.

Security Update - UPnP07 Aug 2007 18:00 GMT5
I was away for a week, and there's a new security update waiting for me
to install. Apple seem to have fixed a bunch of overflow conditions in
various bits of the system. I note this:

Disk Warrior/Data Rescue/Other Opinions07 Aug 2007 17:27 GMT3
The other day I reported losing a 1TB LaCie drive.  I just tried a demo
copy of Data Rescue and it seem to be able to see all of the files.  I'd
need to purchase the product to actually recover/repair the drive (it's
a partioning error I'm told).
What Disk Formats Does Mac Read?07 Aug 2007 17:15 GMT8
If I have an external hard drive, such as a 500 GB USB connect style, will

Computer crash problem07 Aug 2007 11:54 GMT16
My wife's old dual-processor G4 workhorse began freezing up with the
latest upgrade to 10.4. Several times a day she gets the gray screen
and the message to restart. Her computer guy told her on the phone
that it's a bug in the newest upgrade. But he didn't offer any

JAP/JonDo today. What's the difference between these? Any advantage of
one over the other? Any reason to use both?
TIA

Auto-mounter mount options?07 Aug 2007 04:15 GMT4
Is there any way to configure mount options for the auto-mounter?
I'm trying to set things up so I can use a set of SSH keys on a USB
memory stick with a FAT32 filesystem.  By default the automounter mounts
it so that everything is globally readable and writeable, which ssh-add
