im a mac newbie....i just bought the macbook 13"..... is there a way to
put a password on a folder????

Since I got my intel iMac a couple of months ago (now running OSX
10.4.8), I have had a strange, intermittent problem viewing PDFs --
particularly those with equations -- where some of the characters are
either X's, missing, blocked out, or otherwise unreadable. It varies;

I just got an MacBook Pro, Core 2 Duo.  Nice and fast machine.
I'd like to image/backup the whole OS.  I'm not a complete
newbie when it comes to imaging / backuping / templating /
offline-scanning / duplicating  (whatever ;)  whole OSes...

I want to install OSX on an old G3 400mHz ibook (now using OS 9.2.1).
Besides firmware and RAM issues, which I heard of,
I have the much more simple problem that the old imac only reads CDs,

Using CMD-F in OSX 10.4.8, I am presented with 2 options by default:
Kind and LastOpened.  I very seldom want to customize a search by those
parameters.  Instead, I would like to see Name and LastModified.
Is it possible to get Finder/Spotlight to present those options by default?

Just bought a Mac book and thinking about getting an iMac as a desktop.
So in many ways - moving from the "dark side" to Mac en masse!
Been used to Windows up until now - and so unsure what is best for

I have a PowerMac iMac running on 10.1.5.   I also have a an iBook G4
on 10.4.2.
How can I boot the iMac using the G4 install discs?  The iMac keeps
spitting the disks out, even if I reboot while holding down the "c" key.

I've seen various discussions about using (or not!?) a
Macbook Pro with the lid closed while using only a
second screen.
I'd like to do something else:  I don't want to hook up

i just bought a macbok a few days ago and just wanted to asked about
the macbooks heating up, in the media they'v talked a lor about it, but
is it all macbook's that heat up and stop working or is it a fault in
just a few.

Is there any way to change the roll-over of httpd log files
in /var/log/httpd/ ?
Apple is almost ridiculous in how often it rolls over the access_log
and then compresses them and then removes anything beyond six files.

I'm having trouble installing a Mac OS 9 System Folder.  I'm using a G4 400
that I recently reformatted to have one partition with OS 10.4.  When trying
to install various old programs I get a message:
 Classic cannot find a Mac OS 9 System Folder on the startup disk to use.

I have been led to believe that the preferred way of submitting a document to
a commercial printer is as a pdf file, the reason being that such a file is
completely self-contained in regards to fonts and graphics and such.

when i put my macbook to sleep the macbook closes my internet
connection, so anything i was downloading would stop. Is there a way of
putting your macbook to sleep but not close close the internet
connection?

I have a G5 iMac; OS 10.3.9.
