| Teaching an old dog new un-Windows | 16 Aug 2006 03:27 GMT | 1 |
I'm trying to get an inexpert computer user switched from his old and almost non-functioning WinXP system to a (proposed) bottom-end Mac system. He's willing to try, and since his usage is so simple, the change should be easy enough to deal with, so long as I do the setup, which ...

| Having 2nd thoughts about the value of BootCamp | 16 Aug 2006 01:28 GMT | 36 |
After checking out BootCamp, I think it is not for me. Oh, it runs the one and only Windows app' I use, namely "Dragon NaturallySpeaking", every bit as "good" as when I ran Dragon on real PC hardware.

| cannot change file permissions or owner | 15 Aug 2006 21:03 GMT | 6 |
I cannot change permissions or ownership of some files on Mac OS X, even using sudo. Other file permissions change just fine and I can't see the difference. Here is an example (the files have many awkward characters, I left those in just in case that is perhaps the problem):

| locked out of my ibook/won't load OS X CD | 15 Aug 2006 21:01 GMT | 1 |
I bought an ibook that had been used by a school system. It had teacher and student passwords that were required for changing preferences. I wanted to clean the hard drive and add my own Mac software, so I changed the startup disk because I didn't have the password for

| Package Management | 15 Aug 2006 18:44 GMT | 4 |
I'm still new to Macs, I've only had mine since the start of the year, before that, I mainly used Linux and (grrr) Windows. Now, I might have done something stupid (since I'm a total noob). I assume the right way to uninstall an app is to drag it to trash. I

| Apple's Idiot Bar! | 15 Aug 2006 16:11 GMT | 18 |
1. Isn't it awfully presumptuous to call it "the Genius Bar?" I don't hand genius titles out lightly. With a name like that, I expect Isaac Newton (or at least Isaac Hayes) to be working at the Apple Store, squeezing his hands and waiting to help me with my busted iPod.

| What are "recovered files" in trash?? | 15 Aug 2006 15:31 GMT | 9 |
I find that when I reboot I often find a directory in the trash named, "recovered files". What are these and how do they end up in there? Before restarting the trash is empty and then when I restart they are usually there.
