by the looks of things, you guys are just the ones to help me.
I work at a school and we need to have accounts on our laptops which
don't allow students to use the Internet (for test taking purposes),
OSX Server/XRAID Performance: disk write causes read?11 Jun 2006 23:49 GMT1
I've got a weird performance problem on my 2x 2.0GHz Xserve running
10.4.6 which is directly connected to a half-populated X-RAID (only
one RAID controller in use) configured as RAID-5.
As our company has grown, we've run into some filesystem performance

I have a home network and I am trying to connect from my Mac to a share
on my Windows machine. When I use the 'connect to server' dialog box
the Mac always tries to use AFP to connect. Even if I specify SMB (by
using smb://ipaddress) it tries to use AFP (by trying to connect to

Do non-Universal apps run faster on a MBP than their native version on a

I wanna do a picture slideshow, but don't get it.
Tried the solution mentioned in the online help, but it shows the pictures
shuffled. But I want them to be displayed sorted by name.
Can this be done using some MacOS X build-in's?

I have a PowerBook G4 running osx 10.4.2 and whenever I put in a CD, be
it a blank CD or audio cd it will insert like normal, then a second
later it will automatically eject the CD back out. The cd does go all
the way in like normal, it just spits it back out right after its been

Can you place a Mac Mini on it's side?10 Jun 2006 23:35 GMT5
I've got my hands on a Mac Mini and was wondering if it's possible to
place it on it's side? ie orientated vertically rather than
horizontally.
It fits better on my desk vertically but I wasn't sure if the DVD drive
best disk-cloning software?10 Jun 2006 23:10 GMT2
I've been using psync for several years to clone disks
but once Tiger was introduced, psync no longer creates
a bootable clone of the disk.  For the most part,
I can live with that since psync does a good job otherwise.

Just a question to all of you out in Mac land... what do you look for
in a browser, and which one(s) do you use? I know this has been asked
before but it was a version or two ago for a lot of browsers.
I like ad blocking, good rendering (Apple's webkit does a poor job on

Yesterday I logged out of my iMac G5 Revision A running 10.3.9 and when
I did the log in screen suddenly had a new user account shown which I
