Adding a laptop to the household--network question19 Jun 2006 16:41 GMT11
Gang,
I have a recent (non-Intel) G5 iMac.  I also have an Airport Extreme
base station connected to my cable modem in the attic, and an Airport
Express connected to my stereo in another room, for running AirTunes.

pairwise RAM?19 Jun 2006 14:11 GMT19
I've read somewhere a while ago that it is better to istall RAM
pairwise, and I think the poster meant a pair of the same make and
model.
I am about to order a MBP, and I want to max out the RAM to 2 GB.

I am quite eager to get a Macbook Pro, but I am waiting until Apple
makes a Blu-ray optical drive model.  About how long do you think I
will have to wait?

I thought about trolls etc before posting this but I think it is
important and we can safely ignore anyone using this question as troll

Yahoo had a very interesting "worm" , mixture of javascript and ajax
Console apps with > 8 colors?19 Jun 2006 12:28 GMT11
I have a 15-color console (ncurses) application; currently I either
need to fake it badly with 7 colors, or run it in the X emulator.
Terminal.app only seems to have only the 7 A_NORMAL colors and black.
Is there a native OS X curses-enabled terminal that has better colors?

Changing to Applemac19 Jun 2006 06:29 GMT10
Could you help me please? I am considering changing to an Applemac from
a Dell PC. I have three kids at school who will need to use it too, for
homework/internet etc. No big requirements for gaming or anything like
that, standard Office accessories used, nothing really fancy, but ...
Ubuntu 6.06 on an iMac G5.19 Jun 2006 06:18 GMT9
I'm looking to install Ubuntu linux on my iMac G5 (last G5 iteration -
1.9GHz, 1.5GB ram, X600 pro). However, when I put in the CD and press
'c' to try to boot from it, the system's screen goes white and the fans
go to full power. After a bit some text appears as if the distro is
Dell flatscreens on macs19 Jun 2006 05:53 GMT12
I've heard Dell flatscreens on Macs may pose problems, especially using
 DVI. I have a 17" Dell analog-only on my G4; works fine.
After this weekend I expect to have either a Geforce3 or ATI Radeon 7000
in my G4, but may later shop either a MacMini or a MacIntelMini, and

Frustrating People Searches18 Jun 2006 23:53 GMT6
Does anybody have a site to do successful people searches?
Every site I find, from Google, does a search, tells me it can't find
the person, then says -- on teh same page -- that the information is
available at . . . When I click that link it goes to a pay site -- the
Where Can I Get "System 7.5.5" ?18 Jun 2006 22:55 GMT24
For my aforementioned APPLE "PowerBook 540c" computer -- it's
recommended that I use "System 7.5.5" *max 'cause "System 7.6.1" [which
is what's currently on it] is really a stopgap to "System 8" and not
optimized for 68040 computers like "System 7.5.5"  is.
Domed, Airport-enabled iMac cannot see wireless network18 Jun 2006 21:29 GMT4
I have DSL with Verizon and they supplied a Westell VersaLink 327W
router, with wireless. Everything wireless is fine with my Aluminum
PowerBook and my brother's iBook, but I cannot get an old, domed iMac
to work wirelessly. I recently bought and installed a used Airport card
