OS X newbie (but Classic vet) has a few simple questions26 May 2006 15:26 GMT15
1. Is there any way to turn off speech in alert dialogs after a certain
amount of time passes? I've turned off speech in both the Speech and
Universal Access preference panes but it's still happening in the alerts
after several seconds go by. Is that something that's built into the ...
Thunderbird headers pane font?26 May 2006 09:30 GMT2
Does anybody know what font is used to show message headers pane in
Thunderbird (Mozilla Mail client)? Or, better yet how to change it?
Here is the problem: whatever is the font, the bold cyrillic letters are
exactly the same as non-bold, which makes it difficult to see unread
Home directory thinks it's a package26 May 2006 08:22 GMT3
I've got a problem, I'm hoping someone can help with.
I've managed to get myself into the situation where my home directory
thinks it's a Package (according to Get Info). This has the unfortunate
effect of meaning I can't easily view its contents in the Finder.
X11 broken?26 May 2006 05:02 GMT4
I have used X11 for OpenOffice on occasion and a unix version of
Mahjong, but recently, it quit working. I'm not sure if this is because
of updates to the OS (I'm up to 10.4.6) or if I missed it up when I was
trying to change my files to a new account (I was unsuccessful, but

  http://tinyurl.com/ng3sg
I have a Mac at work that does not and never will use either iTunes or
an iPod, but the updaters  keep coming. I've figured out now that it's
UTF-8 problem with xterm on 10.3 (but not 10.4)26 May 2006 00:40 GMT1
I have one 10.3 box and one 10.4 box.  Everything works fine on the
latter, but I'm having a problem with xterm and UTF-8 on the 10.3 box.
The problem seems to be that when I use the Meta (i.e., command) key to
enter a non-ASCII character, xterm sends it encoded as ISO 8859-1
Would love to try gmail, any invites are appreciated...26 May 2006 00:18 GMT4

yenc encoding no longer works with MT-NW26 May 2006 00:13 GMT1
I am aware that MT-NW is long in the tooth, but I much prefer it to all
the other newsreaders. Recently it stopped handling yEnc encoded
binaries properly. I don't know why. It now displays the yenc binaries
as text until the text becomes so long that it freezes the app. Why did
iSight webcam always warm26 May 2006 00:06 GMT6
Have new iSight firewire webcam on iMac (not the built-in one which
lacks flexibility). Even when it is turned off (green light out and
lens cover closed) it remains warm.  Is this normal?  Have not noted
this on USB logitech cam. Only way it will cool down is to disconnect
Need help with shell script25 May 2006 20:15 GMT1
I have a shell script that won't work. I am using a shell script to
call a unix app called reminder. The shell script is simply "rem -c"
When I run the script from the terminal, it works fine. When I try to
run the shell script, it doesn't. Here's what my console log says:
Disk Warrior says HD is damaged beyond repair - followup.25 May 2006 19:26 GMT10
When i posted this, I got advise to buy a hard drive at least as large

manual to off-load my internal HD and then use the Disk Utility on my

I would like to add an external dvd burner to my iMac G3 with 700mhz
processor and OS 10.4 installed. It has only an internal CD burner. I
Have looked at the usual sites (Mac Warehouse; Mac Mall; etc.) and most
