Start-up disk changed for no apparent reason21 Mar 2006 18:32 GMT2
I just noticed that preferences start-up disk now give me a choice
between network start-up (with a ? on the icon) and MAC OSX on Macintosh
HD.  I am supposing that I want to go with MHD and then restart. Correct?

I haven't used a mac for years and now have a powerbook G4 with Mac OS

the next release?
Displaying images on external21 Mar 2006 18:25 GMT4
I need to do my first presentation of pictures ( a few hundred) to a
group of about 25 people. All images are over 2000 pixels a side. And I
have a MacBookPro as of a day ago, so I haven't had a chance to actually
do much with it.
Removing the Desktop Printer in older OS's?21 Mar 2006 18:22 GMT3
Does anyone know how to get rid of -- or at least deactivate -- the Desktop
Printer in older Mac systems? I use OS 8.6 and I had it deactivated somehow
but it started acting up again when I printed a bunch of .pdf documents off
the Web the other day. I've tried removing the Print ...
Ridding my machine of Spotlight21 Mar 2006 16:08 GMT8
Well, actually, I've done the disabling but in doing so I noticed something I
had not seen referenced before (or I just hadn't read further).
When I went to edit my /etc/hostconfig file I found two of them. One had a ~
after the g as in:
advice sought: old G3 iMac and OS X21 Mar 2006 15:28 GMT7
My aunt and uncle, in their late 70s and early 80s, have been happily
using an iMac G3 mostly for email and web surfing for the past five
years. Web surfing has become increasingly problematic and they are now
wondering if they can upgrade their machine to run to OS X. Does ...

no reference to a clock battery.  Is there one?

VShieldCheck bothers my laptop21 Mar 2006 03:41 GMT2
Running Virex 7.5 on 10.4.5.
It runs this VShieldCheck process which takes up idle cpu time, I guess.
Which is ok, but on this laptop it makes the fan run all of the time.
It's a noise factor and I'm starting to hear nasty fan noises from
Finder Weirdness21 Mar 2006 01:56 GMT9
Open Get Info on a Finder item.  Move the mouse pointer over each of the
color dots in the Color label row.  Notice that it is an arrow for all
colors except for green.  When it passes over Green, it changes to the
text I-beam.
What is supposed to rotate the daily, weekly and monthly.out files?21 Mar 2006 00:23 GMT5
At one time these files in /var/log were being rotated.  I just noticed
they have not bee rotated for some time.  I checked daily, weekly and
monthly in /etc and did not see that they were supposed to do it.  My
guess is they are and somehow I have managed to remove the code that ...
Sound probs20 Mar 2006 23:08 GMT1
iMac G5, OSX 10.4.5,
Under Safari, many/most sites don't play music & sound. I've noticed
this on kids' sites mostly, i.e. sesameworkshop.org.
Also, using Classic, my son's older Sys 9 games (Backyard Football etc.)
Recommend: external FW drives(/enclosures)20 Mar 2006 20:02 GMT8
I'm trying to find a good FW400 drive or drive enclosure that is
reliable and fast and works well with OSX 10.4.5.  I have never
purchased an external drive before so I'm a bit ignorant of some of the
criteria.
Mac in the movies20 Mar 2006 19:24 GMT25
I'm doing a little study on Mac in the movies. Other than the iPod in
Firewall, and the Macs in Jurassic Park, has the Mac and iPod made a
cameo in other movies? I was thinking maybe in The Net, but maybe that
was a PC.
