RE: Classic applications - How fast?24 Feb 2006 03:26 GMT1
I'm thinking of getting a G5 mac of some flavor but as with a lot of
people, I have $1000's in
software for OS9. I have a 17" LCD 800 mhz G4 Imac that I can boot into
OS9 or OSX. I usually do that to
lost user/password after archive/install23 Feb 2006 21:58 GMT1
I wanted to undo some changes I made to the system (10.4.5) and decided
that the quickest and easiest way would be to do an archive/install and
retain user/internet settings.
The install went without incident. However, after the reboot, I went to

Success w/ Clamshell Updates (Thanks Garner!) & Question23 Feb 2006 20:36 GMT2
Gosh how I wish I'd had the time to update my daughter's clamshell iBook
(and our other computers) to 10.3..9 earlier.  Despite it's limited RAM
(192) and speed (366 MHz) and capacity (5.5 GB), it seems to work far
better than expected.  Of course time and application experience ...
Advice on transferring files23 Feb 2006 18:25 GMT12
I have a new Mac Book Pro and I need to transfer my files from my old (and I
mean, old) Powerbook 3400. Can I do this via an Ethernet crossover cable?
Any better ideas? I don't have any external drives nor a way to burn CDs, at
least not on the 3400. My broadband internet connetion ...

how to set Java 1.5 as the default?23 Feb 2006 18:15 GMT7
I've installed Java 1.5, but in order to use it from the command line I
need to specify the correct path myself.  Does anyone know how to make
Java 1.5 the default version instead of the current 1.4.2?
Chicken of the VNC alternative?23 Feb 2006 18:10 GMT1
I use Chicken of the VNC as my VNC client. Only one complaint, but a
biggie ... it doesn't support copy and paste.
Any suggestions for a better VNC client?

Reasons for backing up23 Feb 2006 17:13 GMT16
So we have basically 3 different reasons to backup:
- To archive our work (incremental backup)
- To restore our OS after a hardware failure (clone)
- To restore our OS after a software failure (backdated clone so you
A newbie looking for input on networked MACs23 Feb 2006 16:36 GMT10
I'm a Windows IT professional, and one of my clients is a print business who
uses all Macs, with the exception of their one office PC that I built and
maintain.  While I was out there the other day they told me about continual
problems they are having with their network.  It ...
Staple (or something like it) for OSX?23 Feb 2006 14:14 GMT1
W-A-Y back in System 7, there was a nifty little utility called "Staple".
Using it, one could "staple together" diverse documents created by different
applications, then with one click, open them all.
For example, let's say that on a regular basis, you used a word processing
Free way to compress files?23 Feb 2006 12:11 GMT1
I am looking for the most effective (and free) way to compress files so I
can backup folders on CD.  I tried using the Mac OS 10.4.5 Create Archive
function under the Finder's File menu, but it only shrunk 1,100 MB of files
down to 1,020 MB -- not very impressive.  Is there a better ...
