Is there a freeware version of a Mac window scroller-upper yet?

Is there some special method to getting Software Restore to continue
once the disk is in?  It doesn't seem to recognize its own disk!

I'm unable to enter commands into a shell window because each shell
window is automatically exiting upon start. I was experimenting with a
