Is there some kind of open/free utility so that you can launch mac apps
like Safari, iTunes ??
darwin is free, so one just needs something extra to be able to launch
mac apps...  (or is it there already, in Darwin ??, I guess not)

I know virtually nothing about mac computers - I have previously only used
pc's with windows. But now I (actually my wife) has a Mac at home which I am
trying to connect to my home network.

PowerBook + Cinema Display with need to layout drawings for reference.

Is there any possible way to show what Application Switcher (Command-Tab)
shows but from the shell?   This would be useful for determining
what applications are open which could then be used to search

A friend of mine has a combo drive ibook, and he asked me how to
uncrypt a dvd, then burn to dvd.
I thought that mac the ripper would have done the job, but aparently
not.  Anyone know any good ways/programs to go from dvd, to image TS,

For some reason, Spotlight cannot search the content of HTML tags.
I would like to see all the pages that have certain tags and nothing
shows up. I can see the text content of the pages, but not the tags.
Any way to work around this?

Last year I started changing from Windows machines to Apple OSX. I bought a
17" Powerbook and am very happy with it. This month I ordered an iMac core
dual to replace my old windows desktop.

I'm about to upgrade from Panther (10.3.9) to Tiger. I have two external
FW drives.
I've read the many  "firewire problems" posts on MacFixIt.
How would those here assess firewire and Tiger (both 10.4.3 and 10.4.4)?

both my g5 desktop and ibook laptop switch into all caps at times. am i
making some stupid mistake on both machines or ?

I'v been geting errors so ran Disk First Aid. First it found:
Problem:  Volume Bit Map needs minor repair, 4, 35
Then said it was repaired successfully. I run Verify and it reports:
Problem:  MountCheck found serious errors.
