Anyone speak Russian?09 Jan 2006 12:49 GMT15
Please forgive me for what will look, at first glance, like off-topic
stuff. I'll get on-topic soon.
I'm a native English-speaker but...here I am, living in Moscow and
driving several Macs.
Error? in iTunes help.09 Jan 2006 07:38 GMT1
In MP3 importing/converting, both higher bit rate and higher sample rate
are said to correlate to higher quality and larger file size.
I took a seven-plus minute Audio CD file and verified (as expected)
that stereo is double the size of mono.  Then I converted the file with
Subject: modem dial up in os x 2.8 please where is/which ppp script?09 Jan 2006 06:00 GMT1
I am afraid I have to fix sth in my modem or ppp settings on an ibook g3. My
dial up provider seems to use an untypical server, the modem under os 9
connects without problems on the same machine (so it is no modem
incomatibility), but I have unfortunately only occasianal connections ...
ITunes Problem09 Jan 2006 05:36 GMT9
I do have a problem with ITunes. Since I started collecting Audio Books,
too, my library is a big mess.
I found out, that there is the possibility to select a category for
every file, besides the normal Artist, Album and Genre setting. If you
WTF?  Can't shut down/restart09 Jan 2006 04:20 GMT4
I've got a 733/G4 with OS X 10.4.3 running, and recently it won't shut
down or restart without physically pressing the restart button.  All
the apps shut down, but the desktop picture stays and nothing more
happens - even leaving it overnight!  The cursor remains visible and is
manpages  & MANPATH redux09 Jan 2006 03:47 GMT5
First I'd like to profusely thank all who tried to answer my question as
to the the location of MANPAGEPATH.  It generated more discussion than I
could have imagined.
By the way, as I should have stated in the beginning of the discussion,
Beach Ball Always Spinning in iTunes09 Jan 2006 02:58 GMT3
iTunes could be the *only* app I have open after a restart and the
beach ball appears practically every other time I do something, e.g.
scrolling through a playlist, double-clicking to play a track, etc.
It's infuriating!

vga font for osx08 Jan 2006 19:20 GMT1
I've been searing for a vga font for osx to use with the terminal to
eliminate ugly characters during ssh sessions. If anybody knows where to get
one I'd love to know. I usually use vga.pcf on my other systems (one fbsd
and one linux) that use X. I was trying to avoid having to ...
firewire and permissions08 Jan 2006 18:51 GMT4
I bought a firewire drive to back up all users' data.
I made just one partition and unchecked "Ignore ownership".
However, any user can bring up the firewire drive and look at any files. Even
those she shouldn't have permission for.
Compressing files/full drive not making sense08 Jan 2006 17:27 GMT3
I want to transfer some large (around 5.5 Gbyte) iMovie and iDVD files
from my Powerbook G4 to a PC for backup purposes, so I thought
compressing them would be a good idea in order to preserve their
contents/keep them within the Mac file-system and also save some disk-space.
Widgets08 Jan 2006 16:37 GMT7
Can anyone recommend any TRULY worthwhile Widgets, and list the source for
downloading them?
I'm not talking about one that will supply scores of the Uruguayan national
soccer team in last night's game with northern Siberia, or one that will
Safari/iChat launch problems ?08 Jan 2006 15:07 GMT5
(I believe I should have posted this question here rather than in
<comp.sys.mac.apps>, thus this is a double post with a different subject
name)
Need advice: I can't launch Safari or iChat. Or they launch after 5-10
