PC Person looking to upgrade IMAC OS14 Jan 2006 12:47 GMT5
I need to move my daughters machine to the later version and don't
have a clue as to how to go about things like purchasing the Operating
System, then actually installing it, etc.
I regularly do PCs where I know what I am doing(most of the time) but
Permissions for /Library/Logs/Software Update.log14 Jan 2006 11:40 GMT2
OS X 10.3.9 with latest updates as of 12-Jan-2006.
This is a problem I have had for a long time, as Software Update doesn't
show any entries in "Installed Updates". The last entry in "Software
Update.log" is from 2002-08. I've posted about this before, but this
Which printer?14 Jan 2006 10:14 GMT2
We are looking to upgrade our printer capability.  We have been using
monochrome laser and an inexpensive color inkjet.  2 questions seem to
be largest for us:
1.  For photo printing, is highest quality obtained from color laser or

Dear group,
Today I was looking at a website doing some research and all of a
sudden everything on the screen started shaking. I mean the whole
screen was vibrating and it wouldn¹t stop. I tried force quiting the
Question About Dual Processor14 Jan 2006 02:50 GMT9
For the dual processor G5, do apps have to be written to specifically
take advantage of the two processors, or does the operating system do
this? If the latter, how well does it do it?
Maybe someone can recommend a not-too-technical article. Thanks.
How to I get "Find" to look at file names first?14 Jan 2006 02:13 GMT1
When I try to find a file (cmd-f) in Tiger's finder from a piece of its
name, I have to manipulate the mouse too much. The reason is that the search
application (Is it spotlight?) opens up requesting "Kind" and "Last Opened".
To get to "Name contains" requires a mouse operation.

Has any provision been made with the new (intel-based) macs to allow
existing software to be run? My guess is no.

The Desktop and its attributes14 Jan 2006 00:42 GMT1
I killed my Desktop.
While writing a script to move files off the Desktop,
I advertently moved the entire Desktop folder
and then, not realizing it, deleted it.
about Disk Utility...14 Jan 2006 00:12 GMT2
I recently purchased an iMacG5 (20"-er!!) and whatta gem!!!
The thing is, I've 'graduated' from OS9 to 10.3.9. Back during 9 it was
prudent to rebuild the desktop on occasion.
Now... I was told it is a good idea to Verify & Repair Disk Permissions.
A wish for ShapeShifter --- please read.14 Jan 2006 00:09 GMT2
I periodically email Unsanity and ask for a particular feature. They always
respond that it will be considered but probably not unless there's demand.
Well, I'm asking you to consider this.

Several folders appear when starting OS X13 Jan 2006 22:43 GMT1
On our computers, we have 3 network volumes that we have mounted at
startup. These have been added to the startup items so that they are
automatically available for users when the login. The problem is that
each time a user logs in, 4 or 5 folder windows appear. One for each
Where does Spotlight store its index?13 Jan 2006 21:35 GMT2
I'm trying to find out how much space spotlight is using up on my
computer with its index file. Does anyone know where I can find this?
Also, does anyone know if Spotlight indexes mounted volumes? Or does it
use the index from that shared volume to do its search?
