Increasing general computer knowledge & skills01 Oct 2005 00:27 GMT12
As an IT Manager of a research institute I am faced with a lack of
general IT / computer knowledge throughout the organization. I have
held computer workshops in the past, but invariably those who need the
training the most never attend. I am considering having some mandatory
Appletalk print server drops printers30 Sep 2005 23:49 GMT1
I have an Mac server that seemingly randomly quits advertising printers
and receiving jobs from clients.  The server is running 10.3.9.  It
doesn't just drop one printer it drops them all.  CUPS still prints
fine and I can print from the server but no clients can send jobs or
Thread "leakage" in Safari?30 Sep 2005 23:10 GMT8
I noticed in activity monitor today that Safari had 25 threads
running, and was chewing up over 300MB of real memory.  And it
was chewing up enough CPU to show up in the top 3 even though it
was idle.
Strange Tiger Install problem30 Sep 2005 23:07 GMT9
After my disaster with Techtools Deluxe (see previous post), I am
working on different backup strategies. One thing I decided to do was
make my external drive for both my desktop systems a startup drive, so
I could run from the external drive if my internal drive got trashed.
backup software30 Sep 2005 22:06 GMT3
Does anyone have a good recommendation for backup software?  I would
like imaging software - I used PartitionMagic (now Norton Ghost) for
Windows and loved it.  I'd like to be able to restore my harddrive from
the backup disk.  Thanks.
System freezing at startup30 Sep 2005 20:03 GMT2
To begin, I have System 9.2.2 on both Hard Drives
My computer freezes when I restart from the Slave drive, which I intend
to be my sole 9.22 drive.
The other drive will be for OS X, as soon as all's backed up etc etc
Video Messenger-ing with voice. Is there One for the MAC?30 Sep 2005 16:52 GMT4
Can anyone help. I have a mac -- my girlfriend in Romania has a Windows
XP. We want to video messenger. Yahoo messenger claims it has a
"Messenger with voice for MAC" but it doesn't seem to work. I have also
tried Hotmail. Again it does not work. She has video messengered with
[WS] [Upgrades] Heat Sink on Presto! Anybody knows?30 Sep 2005 16:11 GMT1
I've dug out from my memory box Wallstreet, G3@500, 256Mb Ram, HDD40Gb,
two batteries (one Apple, one third part), mint condition except for a
bad scratch near the trackpoint, but it's only an estetical issue.
I've then bought from an online store the Presto! G4 Card@500Mhz. The
Printer not printing30 Sep 2005 16:08 GMT3
I'm using a Dual Processed G5 with 1GBmemory and OSX.4 (Tiger).  When I
originally setup the printers, I got a test page. I used windows printing.
Now when I go into any application and try to print the G5 appears to print
fine but nothing comes out of the printer.  I've downloaded ...
PureFTPd Manager uninstallation problems... (10.4.2)30 Sep 2005 07:28 GMT1
I tried Jean Matthieu's PureFTPd Manager software for a little bit... it's
an excellent piece of work, but it didn't really suit my needs. However,
after uninstalling it I noticed that I can no longer log in using OS X's
built-in FTP server; instead, I receive the error message
Uninstalling Printer Drivers30 Sep 2005 05:00 GMT1
When I installed OSX the first time, I installed all the printer driversas
part of the customised installation. I have since found that these take up
about half a gig and I'd like it back - the drivers are all but useless to
me.
Why is Mac OS X such utter trash?30 Sep 2005 04:34 GMT50
Every time I install an application, boing it goes off optimizing the
sodding volume. This 15 minutes after I installed another application
which did the same thing. What more can really be omptimized in such a
short time span? It's brain dead.

Mac OSX Server best practices?30 Sep 2005 01:49 GMT3
I'm getting started on setting up a Mac OSX 10.4 Server box, and I was
wondering if there's a best practices guide for OSX installation.  For
example, I will have an account santos on the server, but I also plan
tobe the administrator.  Should I simply type in my user account name,
personal file sharing, over the internet?30 Sep 2005 01:25 GMT2
I am trying to have some co-workers in another office building (not a
part of my network at all) have access to some files on my machine.  I
am running Panther with PFS on... but when anyone tries to "connect to
server..." it never works.  I am sure I am missing a simple step, but I
