apple's system transfer tool25 Oct 2004 20:36 GMT1
Incidentally, I've just used Apple's new system-transfer tool to start
off the new powerbook, and noticed that it successfully copies /sw and
the contents of /Library/Perl as well as the more obvious directories.
It doesn't get /usr/local, though, which seems an odd omission, or
Apache::DBI on panther25 Oct 2004 15:20 GMT5
Out of curiosity, is anyone else seeing DBI errors in their Panther Apache
error log? Here's a typical example, slightly obscured & pretty-printed:
   [Thu Nov 20 11:24:57 2003] null:
        DBI connect('host=$h;database=$db','$un',...) failed:
Setting the name of screenshots (etc)25 Oct 2004 08:10 GMT1
I find it a nuisance to have to hunt down the "Picture #.pdf" file
to rename it.  It seems as if there should be a more direct way to
do this.  For instance, I'd be happy to have a Open Dialog come up.
Am I missing something obvious here?  I found a cute hack in "Mac
libapreq 1.3 fix18 Oct 2004 18:01 GMT1
Having replaced a powerbook, I've been banging my head against libapreq
again, o joy. I can confirm that in order to install it you need to
apply Stas's patch from last year, as found here:

Yet another Mac OSX and DBI question17 Oct 2004 23:07 GMT5
My first posting here.
I checked the archives and didn't find a reference to this particular
install failure.
I  unpacked DBI-1.45, navigated there in he terminal and ran perl
BBEdit 8.015 Oct 2004 16:16 GMT9
Those BBEdit guys went and implemented another of my "wish list"
feature requests! Remember the one about a button that allowed you to
view output from a perl script in a browser? It's apparently in 8.0, as
well as some other pretty cool new features.
unlocking a file15 Oct 2004 01:48 GMT2
I have a hierarchy of folders that I'd like to delete. Normally I'd use "rm
-r". However, there folders contain at least one file that is locked. I'm
familiar with using chmod to change permissions. However a locked file on a
Mac, as I understand it, is a not a permission thing, ...
Answer to missing /usr/lib/bundle1.o14 Oct 2004 11:00 GMT2
Apparently the problem is related to Xcode packaging, and it's not
specific to Perl - I found complaints about it on all sorts of other
lists. Here's a post about it I found on macintouch.

Safari Bookmarks comparison09 Oct 2004 23:22 GMT4
This might be slightly OT, but... I work in two different locations,
and have two different safari bookmark files, obviously. I was thinking
about writing a script that would log into one computer, d/l that
computer's safari bookmarks, compare that bookmark list to the one on
CPAN problem: cant find header09 Oct 2004 03:09 GMT4

It seems I have a common problem. I just upgrade from jaguar to panther.

OT: what happened to my permissions?06 Oct 2004 10:40 GMT3
Please forgive the OT nature, but I just know you will be able to help.
I upgraded an old Mac I use as a server from 10.1 to 10.2.
After the upgrade, the webserver Documents folder had all the wrong
permissions. I had to log in via the terminal and CHMOD various
Unable to install modules that require compilation of C code06 Oct 2004 04:25 GMT3
I've been struggling for some time trying to use the CPAN module to
install modules with C components.  For example, trying to get DBI
installed yields this:
/usr/bin/perl -p -e "s/~DRIVER~/Perl/g" ./Driver.xst > Perl.xsi
[OT] Text Editor for OSX05 Oct 2004 18:33 GMT16
I apologize in advance for the off-topic nature of
this posting. I've recently been lamenting the
shortcomings of my current text editor for my purposes
(SubEthaEdit since my copy of BBEdit is Classic and a
