| Mac OS X 10.4.10 and Cisco VPN client 4.9.01 - problems | 26 Jul 2007 12:06 GMT | 7 |
Having updated to Mac OS X 10.4.10 (via software update first, later via combo update), I found the connections with Cisco's VPN client 4.9.01 (0030) - the latest at our university - to be more than flaky. For no apparent reason the connection seems not to work, with a

| alternative DNS | 26 Jul 2007 05:52 GMT | 3 |
I use Safari. Often, a page will not load completely until I reload. What would cause that? I don't know if the problem could be with the DNS, but I have found that alternative DNSs can be faster. (I type the IPs in, in TCP/IP in

| Computer says it can't initialize the modem. | 18 Jul 2007 03:46 GMT | 5 |
Computer says it can't initialize the modem. I am running OS 8.6 on a computer that was able to connect to the Internet using a USR sportster external modem dial up connection over a year ago. Recently I tried for the first time in that long period to

| Thoth 2.0 | 17 Jul 2007 23:38 GMT | 6 |
Brian Clark has released Thoth 1.8.3, mostly bug fixes but also an increase to the number of connections to 8. He's also still working on Thoth 2.0. See http://cortig.free.fr/Thoth/?cat=2 for some screen shots. Thoth remains

| bites, bytes, packets, TCP, and DSL speed | 17 Jul 2007 18:55 GMT | 36 |
Years ago I read that when an eight-bit byte is sent by TCP, two extra bits are added. I think that must be wrong because I have found no corroboration. TCP uses packets. A packet header has at least 20 bytes and may have as

| Curious bug | 15 Jul 2007 20:02 GMT | 2 |
The mail program in the iPhone's version of Mac OS X has a curious bug. After emptying my mailbox (POP3 mail), it says "2,147,483,645;2,147,483,645 unread".

| DSL speed | 10 Jul 2007 07:26 GMT | 27 |
I signed up for DSL advertised at up to 768k down and 128k up. It runs pretty consistently at 654k down and 105k up (85% and 82% of the "up to" speeds). Running the phone line through a point-of-use surge protector has almost no effect.

| Argh! It's contageous | 07 Jul 2007 20:53 GMT | 2 |
I just tried to double-click on an article in Safari 3.0.2 to expand its size to make it more readable. It works with Safari on the iPhone, so why doesn't it work with Safari on the Mac? (That's a rhetorical question.)

| Another DSL speed question | 04 Jul 2007 20:23 GMT | 6 |
Currently we have four computers on an Airport Extreme network with a 6 Mbps DSL connection. The New iMac is running 10.4.x and all the others are running 10.3.9. Download throughput on the iMac and the 1.33 GHz G4 iBook is well into the 5 Mbps range. On my 867 MHz Quicksilver ...

| I called Verizon Wireless today | 04 Jul 2007 18:22 GMT | 22 |
After pressing a few menu buttons, I reached one that said "cancel my account", and pressed that one. After listening to music and infomercials, a guy answered and told me his name was Mark; when he asked my name, I said "Michelle". After I told him the last four digits

| Phone phrustration | 04 Jul 2007 02:35 GMT | 44 |
When I tried to activate my new iPhone, AT&T told me that it will take 24 hours to transfer my old phone number to the iPhone. Until that happens, I can't use the phone for anything, even though their FAQ said that I could make calls with it, but not receive any.

| Which Wireless Bridge | 03 Jul 2007 03:27 GMT | 2 |
I've been looking into connecting my old eMac to the wireless router on the other side of the house, in the cheapest/easiest way.
>From what I've read USB wireless adaptors are generally a nightmare (depends on OS version etc. & I want it to work when I upgrade!)

| Can MacBook Share iPhone's Connection? | 03 Jul 2007 01:15 GMT | 4 |
I am considering buying a MacBook to replace my current PowerBook G4 later in the year (if/when Leopard is delivered). What I am pondering -- does anyone know that if I also get an iPhone, whether I can then piggy back an Internet connection (I know, it's AT&T's panned Edge ...
