| POPFile | 12 Apr 2005 02:45 GMT | 2 |
I'm wanting to try POPFile <http://popfile.sourceforge.net/> so I can get decent spam filtering with MacSOUP. Unfortunately I haven't a clue how to get the Perl modules I need up and running or how to get POPFile setup. The help files are all in high level geek so I'm left out in ...

| Can't Post from Hogwasher / Can Post from Unison | 10 Apr 2005 21:47 GMT | 4 |
A couple of weeks ago I installed a Linksys wireless router so that two Macs could concurrently access the internet via a shared cable modem. Subsequent to this installation I am no longer able to post to the net via Hogwasher, but I am able to post via Unison. Both Hogwasher and ...

I'm trying to set up file sharing between two Macs via Airport. I have no base station, but on the iMac I created an Airport network, and connected my Powerbook to the network (at least, the Airport icon on both show as connected, and both show the same network

| unison questions (currently a thoth user) | 09 Apr 2005 03:56 GMT | 1 |
I've been using thoth forever, but I realize that thoth may die soon (if not with tiger, then probably with the next major OS upgrade). There are a few things that thoth does that I like, and I am wondering if it's possible to do these things in unison...(I have just been

| Unison -- Clustering Newgroups | 09 Apr 2005 00:37 GMT | 1 |
I've just now installed Unison and am giving it a try. What I haven't been able to figure out is how to form what I'll dub a "newgroup cluster" where the postings from several newsgroups are treated as though they are coming from one. This allows one to peruse a number of

I have an airport base and an express in the house. The express is setup as the remote base station in the WDS network. Question - in the express' config, should it be "create a home network (home router)" or "join an existing wireless network (wireless client)"?

| Phone line or server? | 08 Apr 2005 18:44 GMT | 6 |
I told support that I consistently connect at a the same speed as my other ISP, but downloads take twice as long. In bold capitals, support replies it must be the phone company's fault and there's nothing they can do about it.

I'm wanting to setup a BBS on one of my Macs for something interesting to do. I don't want to run a GUI based BBS like First Class, TeleFinder, or HiBBS. I find Hermes to be too limited in the areas of customization. I was looking at using either the old Pancake BBS software or ...

| Is it overkill to set up BIND for a home network? | 08 Apr 2005 02:55 GMT | 8 |
(This all started because our little D-Link home router will only send its logs via e-mail to an SMTP server, and because our current ISP's SMTP requires authentication which the router can't provide, I was thinking of setting up local SMTP service on an iMac just to get the

| I will NEVER understand Mac networking! (rant) | 07 Apr 2005 20:04 GMT | 55 |
I just gotta find a book devoted to describing how to setup a Mac-Extreme for all the possible uses it can be put to. Tried to decipher one of those foot-thick off-the-shelf books about networking in general, but they are meant to be used by Unix and

| How come my Linksys router reports DHCP client (Mac laptop) name as garbage characters? | 06 Apr 2005 22:08 GMT | 3 |
I'm got a Linksys BEFW11Sv4 4-port wireless router and a Mac laptop (running OS X 10.3.8) connected to it via its airport card. When I access the router (via its built-in HTTP interface) and look at the DHCP client table, it reports the right MAC address for my laptop but in the ...

| "Can't detect a dialtone" -- indication of modem going south? | 06 Apr 2005 03:55 GMT | 7 |
My connection software (Free PPP) has suddenly started giving me these "can't detect a dialtone" messages most of the time when I try to log on. My ISP is a locally-owned phone co-op and I wrote to the guy in charge of the Internet department and he suggested that the modem might be ...
