several questions. The user manual is OK, but not that well organized

When I try to delete messages in the latest OS X 10.4.11 Mail they just
go light gray.  When I try to drag them to the trash it says:
"The destination mailbox doesn't exist".  ??
I've repaired permissions recently.  It just started to happen
