Looking for photo image cleaner software11 Feb 2008 04:16 GMT10
I've read that some of the scanner software that come with scanners can
remove dust specks from the scanned images.  Does anyone know of
shareware or freeware that can do that?  I've looked at a bunch of s/w
on versiontracker.com but haven't found any.  I'm running OS X Leopard.
firefox add on for broadband speed testing10 Feb 2008 17:24 GMT5
When on Windoze I used the Broadband Speed Tester available
for it, but it isn't available for Mac OS X (I have Leopard).
Is there an add on or open source program that will determine
upload and download speeds in real time?

iShowU and Quicktime10 Feb 2008 05:34 GMT14
I tried a demo of iShowU.  It whirs then crashes with the "the program
puked" message.  The guys at iShowU, a very nice crew, can't figure it
out.  They say the program is making a call to QuickTime, and it's
QuickTime that's barfing. They asked whether I had some 3rd party
HP Director app09 Feb 2008 22:19 GMT1
I have an HP 3055 all-in-one laserjet printer, copier, fax. I recently
installed the new Universal binary for this unit since one of my Macs
is Intel based and the old software would not work on it. But the new
Director app as HP calls it is missing a button that was on the old
Keep MacOS from infecting Flash drives09 Feb 2008 22:08 GMT18
When a flash drive is attached MacOS feels the need to create
a .Spotlight-V100 and .Trashes folder along with a ._.Trashes file

there any way to keep MacOS from writing these unauthorized files, as
Time Machine and disk size09 Feb 2008 03:30 GMT103
Has anyone figured out the ideal ratio for a Time Machine backup disk?
I mean, if you have say a 500GB HD what would be a good size TM backup
disk? 1TB? Of course, the drive should be in use for a good number of
years.

Cycling Through Buttons in Dialogue Boxes with Tab?07 Feb 2008 21:12 GMT12
I'm kind of loathe to shift away from my keyboard whenever I can avoid
it.  One of the *very few* things I miss about Windows is the ability
to use the tab button to cycle through dialog boxes (eg: "cancel" and
"save").
Tabs in Safari07 Feb 2008 17:30 GMT8
As I understand it, you have to press the Apple key to open up tabbed
pages in Safari. Is there anyway to click on links and have a tabbed
page open up without having to press the Apple key.
TIA,
Computing excessively slow07 Feb 2008 17:23 GMT5
I have a MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz.
I have noticed that several times a day, the hard drive starts spinning
excessively and everything on the computer grinds to a crawl. Programmes
take for ever to boot up and web pages take ages to appear.

Before I switched to Macs I was a satisfied user of Demons Turnpike
Newsreader. In recent times I've been making do with Google Groups;

offline newsreader that also handles binaries. I'm happy to pay for
