I'm a long-time user of xfig and I like it a lot. Unfortunately, xfig is broken on my Mac system, and crashes without warning whenever I try to access the menus. I have no idea whether the problem is with X11 or with xfig, but apparently it's a known problem without any solution so

I have some MPEG/MPG encoded files that play fine in Quicktime. When I import them into Final Cut Express I get a perfect picture but no sound. I want to build a video from the clips. I've tried converting file types via Quicktime but that does not help.

I spend a lot of the day ssh'd into a linux server at the institution I work at. From my previous (windows) machine running putty or secureCRT (terminal emulators) I could sit in the ssh session for days without being booted off, but now from my new MacBook I get reset

I'm sure this is a well worn idea but as I use my Mac from day to day I wonder why we even have to bother with the idea of apps. Seems like it's just an unnecessary abstraction for me to care that for email I need an email app, or that for video editing I need a v.e. app, etc. ...
