need a recommendation for mac/osx/intel drawing software05 Jul 2007 02:30 GMT2
I'm a long-time user of xfig and I like it a lot. Unfortunately, xfig
is broken on my Mac system, and crashes without warning whenever I try
to access the menus. I have no idea whether the problem is with X11 or
with xfig, but apparently it's a known problem without any solution so

Leopard vs Ram04 Jul 2007 20:45 GMT33
My IMac is the 2gig Intel duo Core version with 1 gig of Ram.
I'm tossing around the idea of upgrading from OSX 10.4.10 to Leopard
when it's available.
I don't see any recommendations from Apple on suggested amount of Ram if
Filemaker Database Needs Cracking Open04 Jul 2007 18:18 GMT2
I have a database that's in FileMaker Pro. I bought an application
that used it because it seemed to be a solution to my problem of
cataloging my huge vinyl/CD/cassette/DVD/VHS/book collection. The
software worked about half way what I wanted but I knew it was done in

MPEG/MPG Files04 Jul 2007 13:32 GMT2
I have some MPEG/MPG encoded files that play fine in Quicktime. When I
import them into Final Cut Express I get a perfect picture but no
sound. I want to build a video from the clips.
I've tried converting file types via Quicktime but that does not help.
ssh'ing to a linux server from terminal: connection reset by peer04 Jul 2007 04:33 GMT7
I spend a lot of the day ssh'd into a linux server at the institution

secureCRT (terminal emulators) I could sit in the ssh session for days
without being booted off, but now from my new MacBook I get reset
Why do we need apps?04 Jul 2007 01:55 GMT46
I'm sure this is a well worn idea but as I use my Mac from day to day I
wonder why we even have to bother with the idea of apps.  Seems like
it's just an unnecessary abstraction for me to care that for email I
need an email app, or that for video editing I need a v.e. app, etc. ...

I visit a webmail site and Safari 2 used to autocomplete addresses,
