So, I boot the G4 back into OS9 to back up some fotos to CD with my old
copy of Toast Lite. OS9 says my disk is "damaged", to use a repair
utility.
Everything seems well-behaved, though. Toast seems to run OK. Disc copies OK.

iCal in Tiger19 Apr 2006 23:45 GMT4
Ever since I upgraded from Panther, I've noticed some issues with iCal.
1. It's much slower to start up and shut down.  When it starts up, I get
the spinning beach ball for 20-30 seconds while it loads calendars.  I
have a personal calendar that doesn't have too much stuff, and I ...
Looking inside ZIP files19 Apr 2006 22:33 GMT5
Is there a way I can look inside a ZIP file and select only the
file/files I'm interested in extracting instead of having to extract
everything all at once?
That would be handy for huge ZIP files which take ages to expand (and
[9.2.2] Joliet File System: any comments?19 Apr 2006 19:39 GMT10
I just ran across something called Joliet File System for OS 9.x. It's
supposed to allow Mac OS to display long file names (longer than 31
chars), especially from CDs that were created using Windows, MP3s, etc.
I have yet to install and try this system extension.

Terminal (spurious command line) problem19 Apr 2006 14:53 GMT6
A weird problem with Terminal.app has arisen in which a command line (
the form <perl file1.plx file2.txt> gets written to the Terminal window
each time a new Terminal window is opened (File->New Shell).
The problem seems to owe its origins to some experiments with

Does Backup follow aliases?18 Apr 2006 23:04 GMT3
I've got Backup 3.0 from Apple, but the documentation is sort of sparse.
Does anyone know whether it follows aliases or not?
In particular, I've got my ~/Pictures and ~/Movies folders as aliases to
folders on a second disk.  If I do a backup of everything in ~/ will the
Airport configuration (os9)18 Apr 2006 21:42 GMT2
I'm confused with Airport, Location Manager, TCP/IP, and Remote Access.
I had a working confiuration:
iBook -> Airport base -> Router -> DSL modem -> Internet.
I added a dial-up backup configuration if DSL is down:
iTunes & disk space18 Apr 2006 19:37 GMT3
We have a iBook with a small HD, and it's getitng full.  The iTune
library is taking up most space (of our own data, though if anyone knows
of any other files we can safely delete, we'd be grateful for the
advice).  As we have an iPod (with more space than the iBook), does
Homemade DVD is Copyrighted!?!  HORRIBLE REVOLTING DEVELOPMENT!!!18 Apr 2006 18:09 GMT48
Originally I tried posting this last night, but it didn't show up.  It
could be the machines conspiring against me again.  If the first post
does show up later, please ignore it and reply to this one.
To recap the agony which has consumed my life for the last four months,
Advice re: buying an Intel Mac18 Apr 2006 16:08 GMT9
If the Mac you now own is running great, I advise you to not
buy an Intel mac until next year.
If you don't agree with me, I suggest that you purchase the
newest issue of "MacWorld".
Thunderbird : how to mark a news message as "unread" ?18 Apr 2006 15:25 GMT2
When browsing through news messages I like keeping the most interesting
ones as "unread" and displaying only unread messages. That is what I do
using Outlook Express (on PC). But I can't find how to mark a message as
"unread" in Thunderbird.
My wife can't run iTunes18 Apr 2006 14:15 GMT1
Both I and my son can run iTunes from our accounts on our iMac, but when my
