I teach computer literacy (Windows based) and one of my students has a
mac.  He needs a standard ascii text editor for several assignments --
cut HTML source code from my web site and paste it into a text editor
and modify it and save it as standard ascii text with an html ...

I'm looking for a good text-only editor working with tiger, and maybe
free... I know there's bbedit, but what I need is nothing more than a
text editor with syntax highliting...
Do you know any opensource/free program like that?

I'm getting a message which reads:
(null) - New Settings
New settings have been created for this application. Do you wish to use
these settings from now on?

Suddenly I can't close a message after opening it. I put it in trash but
if I try to delete it, it comes back to my In folder. Messages stay
unread no matter what. Could this be a virus?

How can I teach Carbon Emacs to find the Octave app I just installed?

I own a Powerbook G4 with a 40Gb hard drive.  Lovely machine, but the
hard drive is filling up with media files including an ever expanding
iTunes library (my CD collection would fill up the hard drive on its

I just installed the iWork trial (fully functional for 30 days, including saving
and printing). I drop the Keynote icon on Script Editor and get a dictionary. I
drop the Pages icon on Script Editor and get a message that the application is
not scriptable.

But suppose I'm either in the Finder or doing a big task in some big
app,  and as a temporary interruption I open a small app or utility from
a hidden DragThing dock, perform some small task, then close the small
