When opening Excel, (unbidden) it tries to load dozens of files of various types, displays error messages for those not supported by Excel, and then runs out of memory and crashes. The latest log is below.

In Excel I'm trying to simply use this, (C) to indicate a cell phone number
and Excel keeps defaulting to the copyright sympbol (small c with a circle
