You should have a preference pane called Ink available. Unfortunately
while it does work in applications such as TextEdit, BBedit etc I
couldn't see how to enable it in Word 2008.

Microsoft doesn't make the program for Macs - but then again, they don't
have to. Have a look here - if you have a tablet you should be good to go:
[PDF]
Ink: Handwriting Recognition
And see your tablet's Quick Start Guide or the information on the Bamboo
Fun Pen Tablet Driver CD.

BTW - I was assuming you're using a Mac although you give no indication of
what OS or what version of Word you're using. If it *is* a Mac & you've
upgraded to Leopard (10.5.x) you may also need to review the info here:

Landing in a discussion group for users of Mac versions of Word when you
don't want to is a charming foible of MS's "discussions" web interface,
which I see you used. Here's where all the groups are listed:

Or you can send into a Company that will send you a form to fill out
showing how you write and print all the letters, and numbers and Upper
and Lower case wait a few weeks and they will send you a Font based on
your handwriting.
