Custom Dictionary is not available

All of a sudden I'm getting this error message when I try to spell
check:

'The custom dictionary ³Custom Dictionary² is not available.'  and Add
is grayed out when I spell-check.

I've been into Prefs, discovered that my custom dictionary is unchecked.
I checked (ticked) the box  to select ³Custom Dictionary²  -- but it's
still unavailable.

While there, if I select any language other than my default (English
(US) - including None - it defaults to English (AUS).

I seem to remember this came up recently  from another poster. If the
solution was identified, perhaps you could let me have the Subject
Header and I can look for it.

Otherwise, what to do?

Weirder and weirder... I just tried the steps above again.

I was able to set the language to None  -- and now it's working.

Hmmm.
