Word crash when searching files or changing preferences

I am running Word for Mac 2008.  When I attempt to search for folders or
files or attempt to change the location of files in preferences, the display
crashes, and I get a page of graphics gibberish.  The machine locks up and
can only be closed down by holding the power button down.

My local Apple Store suggested downloading the recent upgrade for Mac Office
2008, which I did, but the update manager can't find Mac Office 2008, which
means it won't update.

When I went to "Search for Updates" from Word, it said there were no updates
available.

Comments?

Thanks

Howdy -

I don't know who you spoke with at which Apple store, but I would avoid that
place like the plague:-) What you describe is indicative of an OS X Kernel
Panic which won't be influenced by updating any applications. Word is simply
calling for OS services & the system is buckling. IOW, it isn't a Word or
Office problem, it's an OS problem - and a serious one.

I'd strongly suggest you get some guidance from the appropriate Apple
Discussions forum. Someone there will be able to guide you if you include
all specs about your Mac & OS version:

BTW: You couldn't find any updates for Office because there aren't any
available as yet other than the 12.0.1 mini-fix released a month ago. To
apply it you first need to update the MS AutoUpdate app itself. They can
both be obtained from the Mactopia web site, but I'm certain they won't
correct the problem you're having:

Not wanting to embarrass Bob, but he pasted the wrong link into his post,
and I don't have the correct one.

What Bob was saying is that you need to get your information from the Apple
website, not the Microsoft website, because it's your operating system that
is in trouble, not Word.

You might begin with this article:
