I've just switched the Word spell checker to use a UK dictionary - and
now I am no longer able to add words. The 'Add' option is greyed
out...

Hi fuzzyman -

I would tend to think that's because your Custom Dictionary - to which words
are added - may be defined by the language you were previously using. If so
there are two choices:

One would be to go to Word Preferences> Spelling & Grammar - Dictionaries,
select your custom Dictionary & set the language to None. This should allow
you to accumulate terms of any language in the same Custom Dictionary.

The other would be to go to the same dialog but create a *new* (additional)
Custom Dictionary & define it for English (UK) if you want to keep those
entries separate from the others.

You might find the following page helpful in several regards:

OK - so I go to "Word Preferences-> Spelling & Grammar ->
Dictionaries", select custom dictionary (check it) and choose 'English
(UK)'.

I then select 'OK', go back to the dialog and custom dictionary is
unchecked and back to 'English (AUS)' - which I have *never* chosen!

Ok - so I've read through the page you pointed me to properly now.

I've set the default language properly and created a custom dictionary
with no language. It is still not being used and 'Add' is still grayed
out...

Hi Michael:

OK, so your Custom Dictionary has corrupted.  Delete it and create a new
one.

There are some major bugs in the spelling/language mechanisms currently.  We
are hoping that the first Service Release, which is due out shortly, will
resolve some of them.

You got English AUS simply because it's the first in the list.  Which means
things got pretty pooched.

Hope this helps

Nope - Removing them all from the UI (which doesn't delete the actual
files!) *and* then deleting the custom dictionary files, followed by
creating a new one has the same problem. :-(

Yeah:  It often re-corrupts instantly.

We'll just have to wait for the patch.  Not long to wait now...

Hello John,

I stumbled across this thread and was wondering if you could help.  I am
trying to create a custom lexicon that is placed in the customs dictionary
folder, this part is no problem.  After placing the custom dictionary in the
correct folder,  the custom dictionary window when opened shows the new
custom dictionary, however, it is not selected.  I would like to create a
script or something that will automatically select the added custom
dictionary when it is found in the custom dictionary folder.  Do you have any
ideas on how I could do this?
Thanks!
John McGhie - 16 May 2008 11:38 GMT
You would have to do that in AppleScript, and I have no idea how.  Sorry.
