I have an Excel spreadsheet with a query to a sql database. The Excel file
auto updates from the sql database. I have created a text box in a Word 2002
document where I used the paste special command - paste link to Excel
worksheet object as the source of the link. When the Excel updates the linked
data in the Word document seems to lose connection due to row additions
and/or deletions.

Hi David -
Sorry about the problem but this is the newsgroup for Mac Word:-) Although
some of us work both sides of the street I doubt we have 2002 readily
available for any poking around.
You'll probably have a much quicker & more definitive response if you post
to one of the PC Word groups you'll find here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx
They'll need full version information and [most likely] some rationale for
why there's a linked object pasted into a Text Box in the first place. That
may very well be the cause of the problem since the Text Box, itself, is
actually an embedded object to begin with.
