I created a Word document using MAC 2008 software and need to send it to an individual using Microsoft Window XP Professional. Is there a process to convert the document into a readable format that keeps the document intact?

I'm afraid "Windows XP Professional" tells nothing about which version of MS
Office the PC user has. The *operating system* to which you refer is able to
run any Windows version of MS Office from 95 - 2007:-)

If it's Office 2007 there should be no need for a conversion - the file
format native to it & 2008 are the same.

If the PC user has Office 2000/2002/2003 there *should* be no problem if the
software is fully updated - the converters for the new format were supplied
in a Compatibility Pack.

If the PC user is using Office 95/97 he/she will not be able to open the
file if it's saved in the 2007/2008 OOXML format.
