I can definitely see the logic behind that policy. I suppose the important part is that it's a known issue to Microsoft. As it's not a critical issue, we'll just hang tight for the time being.

I can tell you that to Microsoft, this is an extremely critical issue
because it is doing all sorts of bad things on networks.
It's also ugly: Word saves to files that it is holding open, and expects to
be able to read and write from different parts of the same file at the same
time. Apple file transport protocols do not take kindly to this kind of
greediness; Windows NTFS was designed for it :-)
So the issue is how to use an Apple transport to signal to the file server
(which may BE a Windows file server) that you haven't changed your mind, you
really do want to save this bit and read the next bit at the same time...
:-)
They had this working under 10.4, but Apple has made the game more exciting
in version 5 :-)
